Students uncover tips to structure an eye-catching cover letter

Hear from the students who gained tips for creating an industry-standard cover letter

In the latest one-on-one industry mentor session, students had their cover letters reviewed from representatives from NAB, ANZ, AGL and more.

Stephanie and Palaniappan shared with us their experience and feedback they received to create a striking cover letter.

Why did you decide to attend the event?

I decided to attend because I am looking for a job in interior design which is very competitive and as an international student I need to stand out against a lot of other competitors.

I knew my cover letter was very basic and standard, but I didn’t know what I needed to add to elevate it a bit more. I thought having an industry mentor who looks at cover letters on a daily basis would be able to help me do that.

What was the most valuable tip or piece of advice you received from your industry mentor?

Making sure to connect my skills with the company’s values and the things recruiters are looking for in a candidate, which is something I didn’t even think about before coming here.

If I didn’t attend this event, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.

The industry mentors are very encouraging, they did mention a lot of things that made me feel reassured that I could actually catch a recruiter's attention just based off my cover letter.

I wanted to have my cover letter reviewed so I could tweak it for upcoming job applications.

What was the most valuable tip or piece of advice you received from your industry mentor?

How to start your cover letter and structure it into the correct format. I also learned how to incorporate the particular organization you are applying for and include why you're interested in them.
