Higher degree by research

Commencing international Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students can apply for RMIT RMIT HDR Scholarships and Research Scholarships offered at a School or College level.

Applicants completing high school studies

If you are an international student and:

  • Studying an Australian Year 12 or International Baccalaureate in Australia
    and
  • Receive an offer from RMIT for an Associate or Undergraduate degree.

You are eligible to apply for the following scholarships:

Citizens of countries in Africa residing in Australia

If you are an international student living in Autralia and:

  • A citizen of countries in Africa.

You may be eligible to apply for the:

Citizens of China residing in Australia

If you are an international student living in Australia and:

  • A citizen of the People’s Republic of China (including Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR).

Information for students

Some organisations and government agencies provide funding students to finance their study at RMIT University. Sponsorship programs enhance RMIT's social and cultural diversity.

RMIT welcomes students who have scholarship funded by their home government (sponsored students). RMIT currently has over 800 sponsored students. They are enrolled in a wide range programs in all study levels. Prospective sponsored students need to make their own enquiries about scholarship opportunities available within their home country or about potential sponsorship opportunities (such as funding from your employer to study in RMIT).

Several grants are available to support Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students during candidature. Browse all available research scholarships below to help you pursue excellence in your research.

Financial assistance for overseas study

RMIT offers grants, scholarships and government programs to help eligible students fund approved overseas study experiences. Availability and eligibility vary by destination and program and is not guaranteed.

You will be assessed for all funding you qualify for, but places are competitive. In most cases, you can receive one funding opportunity per overseas experience. 

English language Bursaries for offshore students

English language bursary for Asian students

If you are a citizen of Cambodia, Japan, Laos, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or Vietnam this bursary provides a tuition fee discount on your English language course.

English language bursary for Latin American students

If you are a citizen of a Latin American country this bursary provides a tuition fee discount on your English language course.

Alumni postgradute bursary

RMIT is excited to offer eligible alumni a 10% bursary on full-fee postgraduate coursework programs within RMIT’s College of Business and Law. View the alumni postgraduate bursary page for more information and eligibility.

How scholarships work

At RMIT, most scholarships are awarded through a competitive application process. Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria, which may include academic achievement, personal circumstances or area of study. You may need to submit an application with supporting documents, while some scholarships are automatically considered when you apply for your program. Applications are assessed and ranked, with offers made to the highest eligible applicants.
