Gail E Donne Scholarship in Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine)

This scholarship provides up to $7,500 for one year. 

The scholarship may extend for an additional year depending on your demonstrated academic performance to achieve and/or excel in scholastic activities, and a positive recommendation from the academic head of the RMIT Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program.  

One scholarship available.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

• be an Australian citizen
• identify as a woman
• be a resident of Victoria at time of application
• be enrolling full-time in Semester 1 and 2 2027, in the Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) (BH129)
• be passionate about pursuing a career in laboratory medicine
• be able to demonstrate:
  • academic achievement/ potential
  • interpersonal communication/ leadership skills
  • community involvement
• be able to demonstrate you are experiencing financial hardship, for example if you:
  • receive a Centrelink/Department of Veterans’ Affairs low-income support payment, or
  • hold a low-income Centrelink Health Care Card
• have not previously completed a program at the same level of study or higher

Preference will be given to applicants with a current regional/rural residence or who have moved from a regional/rural area to Melbourne to study this degree.

Supporting documentation

Depending on your circumstances, you will need to provide different types of evidence and material to support your scholarship application. Applications without supporting documents will not be considered.

If you are shortlisted you will need:

• Evidence of your Victorian residence
• Two reference letters from people who know you and can describe your qualities and achievements. References must include name and contact details (phone and email) and not be dated greater than three months ago. The references must be:
  • one personal reference (excluding family members), and
  • one professional reference (any school/university reference, must be on official letterhead).

Application questions

If you are shortlisted for the scholarship, you will be contacted to answer further application questions. Please check the email address you nominate in your scholarship application form at least twice per week. It is expected that the online application will take approximately thirty minutes to complete. The main application questions are listed below to allow you time to prepare your answers in advance prior to starting the online application. When you answer these questions, please use your own words, ideas and experiences — we want to hear your voice, not something written by AI or copied from another source.

• What program are you currently studying (or about to start) at RMIT, and why did you choose this program?
• What are your career plans after you finish your studies at RMIT?
• Describe your two best academic achievements so far, excluding your ATAR or GPA result.
• Describe your interpersonal communication/ leadership skills, providing at least two examples from your study and/or work life.
• Describe your active community involvement (e.g., student/sport/church groups, donating blood, volunteering, etc).

Applications for Semester 1 2027 close 2:00pm Tuesday 20 October 2026. No late applications will be accepted.

This scholarship has been established in memory of Gail Elizabeth Mangion (nee Donne) who was an alumna of RMIT graduating in Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) in 1969.
