You'll build skills and knowledge of molecular diagnostic which will provide an overview of the detection and application of biochemical and molecular biology techniques to provide clinical information in the study of human diseases, including infectious diseases, inherited conditions and cancer.

It is designed to give students an experience that meets the needs of today’s healthcare industry with innovative teaching spaces, state-of-the art laboratories and equipment that replicate clinical environments.
This degree has a practical learning approach, with importance placed on time spent in practice, laboratory-based and work integrated learning activities that will develop your employability skills and capabilities.
You will learn through a mix of teaching methods including, lectorials, tutorials, workshops, practical and laboratory sessions, site visits and online materials.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester may include tests, quizzes, essays/reports, presentations, projects, assignments and exams.
The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.
Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

In your third year, you will complete one full semester of supervised professional practice (clinical placement), providing you with work-ready skills and industry experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory. You will also have the opportunity to study a discipline-focused laboratory medicine project (capstone experience) to develop your research skills.
A Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) will allow you to apply coherent and advanced laboratory medicine theories, concepts and evidence in various real-world settings using a scientific approach, as well as applying systematic thinking and a range of high-level analytical skills, with a blend of digital and traditional tools and technologies to solve complex scientific and medical problems.
You will be able to apply research principles and methodology to design and implement a laboratory medicine research project to address complex real-world scientific challenges and make original contributions to disciplinary knowledge. Your studies will develop your ability to generate and evaluate solutions to all aspects of interdisciplinary professional practice, while complying with the ethical, legal, and regulatory standards that underpin the field of laboratory medicine.
You will refine your ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse audiences, utilising contemporary and traditional formats related to laboratory medicine, employing integrity, inclusivity, and culturally safe practices, and demonstrate responsibility and accountability for your own learning and professional practice as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Your studies will enable you to apply and demonstrate cultural intelligence and cultural safety in practice, with consideration of the experiences and perspectives of First Nations peoples and the global community in all aspects of work.
You will undertake subjects designed to provide a strong academic grounding in biological sciences. These will instil fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities. You will be introduced to the professional field of laboratory medicine via a hospital laboratory visit and basic studies in clinical disciplines.
You will be introduced to the clinical disciplines of haematology, transfusion and transplantation science, clinical biochemistry, anatomical pathology, immunology and medical microbiology, in preparation for your specialisations.
You will prepare for professional practice by being introduced to professional skills in laboratory medicine and specialising in two clinical discipline streams.
In the second half of the year, you will complete a full-time supervised professional practice placement. Organised by RMIT, this is an 80-day placement that provides you with hands-on diagnostic pathology work experience.
In your final year, you will develop skills in laboratory management, genomics medicine, integrative pathology and undertake subjects that consolidate and provide a holistic interdisciplinary learning experience in preparation for the workforce in diagnostic pathology or medical research or further postgraduate studies.

On successful completion of this program graduates may apply for professional membership with the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) subject to meeting specific criteria set by AIMS.

On 1 January 2022, the Government implemented the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).
The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.
You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.
If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.
You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.
