Overview

In this double degree, you will acquire extensive knowledge in the fields of electronic, computer systems, communication and network engineering with the ability to manage teams of technical / professional staff within large organisations.

You will gain the knowledge and skills to find better solutions to challenges in design, construction and maintenance of electronic hardware, embedded systems, firmware development, communication and network systems. 

This could include the automation of electrical and electronic systems; audio and visual information acquisition, digital signal processing; human-machine interaction, industrial or medical instrumentation and monitoring; reconfigurable logic development; distributed computing and provision of security for computer systems and networks.

You will also learn to design and build devices and systems that transfer and store information via radio frequency or optical fibre transmissions, and manage and secure the flow of information through such systems.  

You will have a wide range of options to specialise in various sub-areas of electronic and computer systems engineering, including:

  • digital and embedded systems
  • electronics and sensing applications
  • network engineering and security
  • wireless and optical communications
  • defence systems.

Contemporary managers are increasingly expected to exercise strong ethical judgement and to be dedicated to a process of continuous learning about their practice. They are also expected to work flexibly and effectively with those around them in various organisational structures.

You will graduate ready to move into an engineering management role either relatively early in your career or after a period of experience as a professional engineer, rather than having to undertake further study to prepare for a management role.

You will learn through a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

The School of Engineering, and the College of Business and Law, have Industry Advisory Committees, with members drawn from external industry and professional institutions. These committees help inform degree development and ensure that the content and learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers.

The School and College also have extensive links with industry, particularly through research projects and consulting services. In many cases, industry has provided direct support by donating laboratory equipment.

In the final year of your studies, you will undertake a major project that is either industry-based or simulates an industrial situation. Combining and further developing the key theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for your field, you will work with industry leaders to solve a project challenge.

Before graduating from this degree, you are strongly encouraged to complete a minimum of 10 weeks of engineering industry experience. This allows you to gain first-hand experience in a real-world environment under the supervision of a practising professional engineer. The nature and timing of this experience can take a range of forms.

Opportunities exist for an overseas work placement of between six and 12 months (this satisfies the work experience requirement). These placements are normally taken during a one-year break in the middle or end of your fourth year.

Through partner organisations in Europe, Asia and the United States, the RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program (RIIERP) offers workplace training and academic research placements of between six and 12 months.

Years 1 and 2

In your first two years of study, you will learn the fundamentals of electronic engineering, communication, computer and network engineering, mathematics and physics tailored for these engineering disciplines. You will also complete four business foundation subjects designed to help you succeed in your chosen career.

You will also study an Introduction to Professional Engineering subject, incorporating a humanitarian-focused Engineers Without Borders Challenge. You will have the opportunity to extend this aspect of your studies by completing Humanitarian Innovation electives, enabling you to experience humanitarian engineering first-hand.

Project work will put your knowledge of engineering methods into practice and develop your high-level technical and design skills. You will gain communication, teamwork and leadership skills, and learn how to transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to others.

Years 3, 4 and 5

In your third year, you will choose a major in either computer systems and network engineering, or electronic and communication engineering. This will be your primary focus through the rest of your engineering degree.

Both core and elective subjects from your engineering major will provide advanced knowledge in your specialised field, leading to a major individual engineering design project in your final year of study. This project will be closely linked to industry and should demonstrate high levels of technical competence and organisational skills, as well as your ability to exercise enterprising skills.

A range of engineering electives will be available to broaden your technical knowledge in engineering areas related to your major, enrich your skills, and develop your professional capabilities.

Your final-year (capstone) project will develop and reinforce the skills and knowledge you need - as defined by Engineers Australia - to commence your professional engineering career. You may have the opportunity to present your project at EnGenius, an end of year student showcase event.

You will also complete a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective in Year 4 or 5.

As part of your studies in business, you will choose to undertake either a major or two minors. There are 15 business majors and over 30 business minors available to you to choose from. 

In your final year, you will undertake the business capstone experience subject, which will see you use an ePortfolio to reflect and provide evidence of learning to demonstrate personal accomplishments for personal development, career planning and progression after graduation.

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering) (Honours) / Bachelor of Business, you will have the skills you need to move quickly into management roles in your chosen field.

Electronic and computer systems engineering graduates design and make electronic or computer-based products, or design, install and maintain communication systems and networks for businesses.

Universities and governments also require engineers to maintain and improve their electronic technologies and computer networks.

Other roles exist in power plants, auto-electronics for the car industry, defence and research.

You could also choose to run your own business, delivering services in your chosen specialisation.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering) (Honours) / Bachelor of Business program does not yet have accreditation by Engineers Australia. Accreditation will be sought for this program as soon as it is feasible to do so within the accreditation timelines set by Engineers Australia. Once fully accredited, graduates of the program will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia.

The Bachelor of Business program is not accredited by any external industry or professional body.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent qualification).

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL and units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics, or equivalent studies.

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)

  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)

2023 indicative fees

The Commonwealth supported place (CSP) and Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) rates for 2023 have been delayed by the Australian Government. The first year indicative tuition rates are expected later in the year and will be published when they are available.

2022 indicative fees

In 2022, the annual student contribution amount (tuition fee) you will pay for a standard year of full-time study is between AU$3,985 to AU$14,630*.

Additional expenses

  • Student services and amenities fee (SSAF): AU$315 maximum fee for 2022.
  • Other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment.

Annual fee adjustment

Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.

Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Defer your payment

You may be eligible to apply for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of up to the full amount of your student contribution fees. You may also be eligible to apply to defer payment of your SSAF through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

From 2022, there are new government rules about eligibility for higher education student funding as part of the Australian Government’s Job-ready Graduates legislation. If you're starting a program in or after 2022 and are enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) or have a HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP loan, these changes affect you. Your share of the fee (student contribution) is set on an annual basis by the government and is determined by the discipline areas (bands) of your individual enrolled courses, not the overall program.

How much can I expect to pay for my Commonwealth supported place?

The Australian Government has introduced changes to university funding and student contribution fees under its Job-ready Graduates Package

The fees in the table below apply to students who commenced their program in 2022. Fees for continuing students are available at fees for Commonwealth supported students.

Each course (subject) falls into a band. The band determines the student contribution amount for the course.

Amounts listed in the table below are based on a standard, full-time study load (96 credit points per year) with all courses in the same band. A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load or for enrolment in courses (subjects) from a combination of bands.

HECS-HELP Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

*The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) rates for 2023 have been delayed by the Australian Government. The fee information will be published when they are available.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2022* is $315.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

RMIT awards more than 2000 scholarships every year to recognise academic achievement and assist students from a variety of backgrounds.

The annual tuition fee for 2023 is AU$46,640.
