Understanding your ATAR selection rank

In Victoria, universities consider the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), along with other criteria, as part of the selection process for course offers. Understanding how your ATAR is calculated can help you plan your pathway to university.

The ATAR displayed for each course is the lowest selection rank to which an offer for that course was made including consideration of any adjustments in the most recent semester 1 intake.

How your ATAR is calculated

Your ATAR is calculated by adding up to 6 scaled study scores. In Victoria, that means:

  • the VTAC scaled study score in one of:
    • English
    • English Language
    • Literature, or
    • English as an Additional Language (EAL)
  • scaled study scores from your next 3 top scoring subjects
  • 10% of the fifth and sixth scores that are available.

Next, you're ranked in order of your aggregate score, with a percentage rank assigned in a way that distributes all eligible students across a 100-point scale. That rank is converted to an ATAR, which tells you what percentage of students you outperformed.

So, for example, if you get an ATAR of 80.00, that means you did better than 80% of your age group.

But there's also scaling.

To keep things fair, so nobody is disadvantaged based on what they chose to study, scores are scaled. This is basically because competition is tougher in some Year 12 subjects, and universities need an overall measure of the performance of students in all studies and all combinations.

Scaling can get complicated, but the important thing to remember is you won’t be punished or rewarded for selecting a certain subject. It all balances out.

Information about courses with a Guaranteed ATAR

What is a Guaranteed ATAR?

RMIT offers a range of courses with Guaranteed ATARs (excluding adjustment factors).

This means that if you receive an ATAR equal to or above this ranking, and meet the course prerequisites, we will guarantee you an offer for this course.

The Guaranteed ATAR allows you to know the likelihood of receiving an offer into specific courses in advance. For VTAC applicants to receive an offer, this course must be your highest eligible preference.

However, if you receive an ATAR below this guarantee, you may still receive an offer, depending on the availability of places in this course and whether you are eligible to receive any adjustment factors.

Remember: you can use these guaranteed ATARs to guide your preference planning, but you should always list your courses according to what you would like to study the most.

Eligibility for a Guaranteed ATAR

You are eligible for guaranteed entry if you:

  • are applying for Semester 1* with an Australian Year 12 qualification where you are awarded an ATAR on completion
  • are applying to RMIT via VTAC or Direct
  • meet all other essential admission criteria such as course prerequisites
  • apply while there are still places available.

*Please note: Guaranteed ATARs are subject to change on an annual basis.
