What to do if your ATAR is lower than expected

Didn’t get the ATAR you hoped for? You’ve got more options than you think. Discover how to use pathways and adjustment factors to get into uni at RMIT.

A low ATAR doesn’t close the door

Didn’t get the ATAR you wanted? You’re not alone – and you’re definitely not out of options.

Whether you missed out by a few points or had a tough year, there are still plenty of ways to start studying at uni.

RMIT has multiple entry pathways, including TAFE and vocational study, that can lead straight into the degree you’re aiming for.

What the ATAR doesn’t define

ATAR stands for Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, and as the name suggests, it’s a ranking.

It’s not a reflection of your intelligence, creativity or work ethic. It doesn’t measure your potential, and it doesn’t predict your future success.

So, if the number you saw isn’t what you expected, it’s just that: a number. Not a verdict.

Your pathway into uni through TAFE

TAFE or vocational education (VE) at RMIT is one of the most practical ways to build toward a degree. You’ll study in smaller classes, get hands-on experience and gain an industry-recognised qualification.

Then, if you meet the requirements, you can move directly into an RMIT bachelor’s degree – often with credit for the subjects you’ve already completed.

Bonus: you could graduate with two qualifications instead of one.

Change of Preference

If you didn't get the ATAR you were after, you might want to considering changing your preferences after results are released.

Change of Preference allows you to reorder, add or remove courses from your VTAC preference list. This is a key chance to get into a different course that leads to your dream degree.

What does a pathway look like?

If your ultimate goal is to study business, here is a possible journey:

Enrol in the Diploma of Business

Gain a broad understanding of business with a diploma that will enhance your career.

>

Progress to the Bachelor of Business

Upon successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Business you can apply for the Bachelor of Business with guaranteed entry and credit which will reduce the duration of the bachelor degree.*

>

Graduate job-ready with both qualifications

You could graduate in as little as 3 years with two job-ready qualifications!

There are also packaged pathways which allows you to enrol in both a preliminary qualification and your goal degree at the same time.

An example of a packaged pathway into Psychology:

Enrol in the Associate Degree in Health Sciences/Bachelor of Psychology packaged pathway

Starting your studies in the Associate Degree you will get an insight into health sciences and learn about the major health issues currently facing the community.

>

Progress to the Bachelor of Psychology

Once you have successfully completed the Associate Degree you will roll straight into the Bachelor of Psychology to continue your learning.

>

Finish in just 4.5 years

Graduate with two qualifications to kick start your career or move on to further study.

What if there’s no direct pathway?

Even if there’s no direct pathway to your course, you’ve still got moves to make:

  • TAFE or VE courses: Certificates, diplomas and apprenticeships can help you gain entry into your desired course.
  • Course switch: Start with a related degree and apply to transfer in your second year.
  • Chat to Study@RMIT: Our team can help you find a smart path that fits your goals.

Adjustment factors: don’t miss your chance

If you’ve faced personal or educational challenges, you might be eligible for adjustment factors, also known as equity access. These can boost your selection rank and increase your chances of getting into uni.

Selection rank is calculated by combining ATAR with any eligible adjustment factors and is specific to each program.

So don’t stress

A lower-than-expected ATAR is merely the beginning of a different path. And that path might be more practical, more flexible and just as effective as going straight in. RMIT’s got your back with the support, pathways and advice you need to make your next move with confidence.
