RMIT Indigenous Accommodation Scholarship

For Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who need to relocate to study at RMIT in Melbourne; worth up to $30,000.

This scholarship is awarded for the duration of your program, based on the values and details outlined below.

You demonstrate financial hardship in your scholarship application;

  • $6,000 per year ($3,000 per semester) if you are full-time enrolled; or
  • $3,000 per year ($1,500 per semester) if you are part-time enrolled

You do not demonstrate financial hardship in your scholarship application; 

  • $3,000 per year ($1,500 per semester) if you are full-time enrolled; or
  • $1,500 per year ($750 per semester) if you are part-time enrolled

This scholarship provides funds to assist in financing rental/shared accommodation in Melbourne.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen
  • identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • be able to meet RMIT's Indigenous Eligibility* requirements by providing documentation that confirms you are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage by the application close date
  • have relocated/will be relocating from interstate or a rural or regional area to Melbourne to study at RMIT in Semester 2 2026 (check eligibility using the Regional Adjustment Calculator), or be residing in an area that is 90 minutes or more by public transport to your campus of study
  • be enrolling in Semester 2 2026 in a certificate IV, diploma, undergraduate degree or postgraduate by coursework program at RMIT
  • be able to demonstrate circumstance(s) that impact your ability to study, or be from an RMIT priority group, including:
    • live with a disability, long-term medical condition, or identify as neurodivergent
    • have experienced or currently experiencing significant personal or life difficulties
    • are experiencing financial hardship, for example if you:
      • receive a Centrelink/Department of Veterans' Affairs low-income support payment, or
      • hold a low-income Centrelink Health Care Card
    • are an early school leaver, mature-age student, or you entered university via a TAFE pathway
    • are from a low socioeconomic (low SES) background
    • have recently completed secondary schooling at a SNAP (School Network Access Program) school
  • not have previously completed the same level of program or higher, for example, if you plan to study a Bachelor of Architectural Design, you should not have previously completed another bachelor's degree

In addition to the above:

  • To be considered for the full value of the scholarship per annum, you must demonstrate financial hardship in your scholarship application by providing relevant supporting documentation, for example if you:
    • receive a Centrelink/Department of Veterans' Affairs low-income support payment, or
    • hold a low-income Centrelink Health Care Card

Note: If you have already been enrolled at RMIT for the minimum number of credit points or years to graduate (standard full-time duration), you are ineligible to apply for this scholarship.

Supporting documentation

Depending on your circumstances, you will need to provide different types of evidence and material to support your scholarship application. Applications without supporting documents will not be considered.

You will need:

  • To meet RMIT's Indigenous Eligibility requirements by providing documentation that confirms you are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage by the application close date.

If you cannot provide the required confirmation documentation by the close date, please review the RMIT Accommodation Scholarship as the eligibility is based on financial and educational circumstances.

This scholarship is paid as a stipend (in fortnightly payments) and not as a lump sum.

Notice to applicants

The scholarship application process is highly competitive with a limited number of scholarships available. Unfortunately, not all eligible applicants will receive one.

Only successful candidates will be notified via email to their RMIT student account.
