Career Mentoring

Inspire and empower an RMIT Student. Grow and lead as a mentor.

asdf

RMIT Career Mentoring invites industry professionals to support current students and recent graduates as they plan their future careers.

Now in its 12th year, the RMIT Career Mentoring program continues to foster meaningful relationships between RMIT students and industry mentors. Through sharing your experience, insights and career journey, you can help mentees develop employability skills, expand their professional network, and build confidence in transitioning into the workforce.

This volunteer program is open to industry professionals and recent RMIT Alumni – from recent graduates to senior executives. Join our platform of over 500 industry mentors and connect with students through one-off conversations or 8-week mentoring partnerships. With full flexibility over your availability and commitment level, the program offers a meaningful opportunity to help prepare students for a successful future beyond RMIT.

To join, simply complete a Mentor Application. We will then review this over the following weeks, before adding you to our mentoring platform Chronus. You will then be able to sign in and receive connection requests from mentees.

All job opportunities, internships, and WIL placements must be managed through RMIT Career Connect.

How does the program work?

We have three intakes annually for students, at the beginning of each semester and prior to the summer break. Students apply for the program and complete an onboarding training session before being admitted to our mentoring platform. From here, they can send a limited number of connection requests to mentors at any one time.

There are two types of connection requests students can send:

  • one-off meetings
  • 8-week partnerships.

Meetings can be held online or in person.

Partnerships involve regular meetings with the same student over an 8-week period. Occasionally, the administrative team may assign you to a student mentee for a partnership, if we believe you would make a good match. You can however change your profile settings and only accept one-off meeting requests if you prefer.

Time commitment

RMIT Career Mentoring was built with your busy schedule in mind. The program allows you to control your availability and level of participation by allowing you to adjust the following:

  1. Limit the number of inbound connection requests per month
  2. Choose what type of connection requests to accept, either one-off meetings or partnerships – or both!
  3. Full flexibility in scheduling when to meet your mentee(s)

Why hasn’t anyone contacted me to be a mentor yet?

Since the RMIT Career Mentoring program is primarily a mentee-driven program, the responsibility is on mentees (students and first-year alumni) to contact you. This can be affected by the university calendar, for example if students are on break.

Make your profile stand out to prospective mentees by filling out with as many relevant details as possible. The more complete your profile, the more mentees can learn about you.

Occasionally, the RMIT Mentoring staff will also pair a student with a mentor who we believe are a great match. This occurs once per intake.

Specialised Mentoring Programs

The RMIT Mentoring team occasionally collaborates with different Schools and Colleges to create specialised programs that connect students with professionals from a certain industry.

These specialised programs follow the same structure as the regular Career Mentoring program; the only difference is that students are selected and matched with mentors by RMIT staff. Additionally, mentors may be invited to career-related events hosted for the student mentees by the School.

Below are our upcoming specialist programs for Semester 2, 2026. If you are interested in participating in these, please follow the program-specific sign-up links below.
