Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes receiving and responding to rehabilitation programs developed by Allied Health Professionals.

1. Receive delegation and gather information

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Obtain written or verbal delegation for an allied health activity from the Allied Health Professional. 1.2. Obtain information from relevant sources and delegating Allied Health Professional, according to organisational policy and procedures. 1.3. Discuss and confirm with delegating Allied Health Professional the impact of therapeutic program's contribution to the overall rehabilitation outcome.

2. Plan to deliver a rehabilitation program.

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Obtain information about medical and psychosocial conditions that may impact on rehabilitation outcomes for the person. 2.2. Determine the person's availability according to organisational procedures. 2.3. Identify and plan for any risk and safety issues that may impact on the person's ability to participate in program. 2.4. Prepare equipment and environment for rehabilitation program in accordance with work health and safety (WHS) requirements as delegated by the Allied Health Professional.

3. Assist with the development of a rehabilitation program.

Performance Criteria:

3.1. Assist Allied Health Professional to identify current skills and abilities of the person and how these can be built upon to manage their lives and environment more effectively. 3.2. Assist Allied Health Professional to develop goals and priorities of the person in terms of specific skills required to manage their lives in the short and medium term. 3.3. Identify skills that need to be developed that are outside scope of role and responsibilities as defined by the organisation and refer to the Allied Health Professional. 3.4. Identify methods that will build upon the person's strengths when developing, regaining or retaining skills and abilities. 3.5. Follow the delegations from the Allied Health Professional for the fabrication and adaptation of therapeutic aids and equipment. 3.6. Maintain and update resources for therapy and recreational programs. 3.7. Work under the delegation of the Allied Health Professional to determine methods of evaluating the effectiveness of activities and methods.

4. Assist with the delivery of a rehabilitation plan.

Performance Criteria:

4.1. Gather the equipment and materials as delegated by the Allied Health Professional, legislative and organisational guidelines. 4.2. Check equipment and material and seek advice where safety issues arise. 4.3. Support the person to carry out rehabilitation activities safely, encouraging involvement and confidence, and adhere to the cultural and spiritual beliefs and preferences. 4.4. Provide feedback to individual about involvement in rehabilitation activities.

5. Assist with the evaluation of a rehabilitation plan.

Performance Criteria:

5.1. Assist the Allied Health Professional under delegation to work with the person to review progress. 5.2. Monitor use of adaptive equipment as directed by the delegating Allied Health Professional.

6. Comply with supervisory requirements.

Performance Criteria:

6.1. Identify and note any difficulties the person experiences completing the therapy programs and interventions and report to Allied Health Professional. 6.2. Identify and manage the person's adherence issues, including subjective and objective reporting of the person's response to the program, and report to the delegating Allied Health Professional. 6.3. Report the person's misunderstanding or confusion to the delegating Allied Health Professional. 6.4. Seek assistance when the person presents with needs or signs outside limits of own scope of role, skills or knowledge. 6.5. Participate in supervision processes with the delegating Allied Health Professional in accordance with organisational procedures. 6.6. Document session outcomes in accordance with organisational procedures.

Details of Learning Activities:

A combination of activities will support students learning in this course, such as:

• Face to face and or online lectures to cover theoretical and practical concepts for each topic in the course

• Students will learn to apply their skills and knowledge to work integrated learning (WIL), during simulations and classroom based learning

• Observations of performance in the workplace and industry placement or simulated environment will be a valuable part of your learning experience

• Tutorial activities (individually and in teams) to discuss, debate, critique and consolidate your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts within specific topics

• Online discussion and activities support you to collaborate with other students in your course and debate and debate and discuss ideas

• Self directed study time to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts

• To further facilitate learning, students are strongly encouraged to use a range of communication tools between themselves and their course instructor as well as between themselves and fellow students by using the online learning platform.

Plan to deliver a rehabilitation program 

This first lecture provides students with a definition of rehabilitation, an explanation of the types of rehabilitation and the role that the Allied Health Assistance in a rehabilitation facility plays.

Students are required to discuss and complete a workplace scenario in a group to apply their knowledge.

Assist with the development of a rehabilitation program

The second lecture looks at how an AHA helps to identify a client's current skills, abilities and work with the AHP to develop client centred goals. 

Students are taught about how to identify when a client has  needs that are outside organisational scope and how to make referrals.

Students are required to discuss and complete a  workplace scenario in a group to apply their knowledge.

Assist with the delivery of a rehabilitation plan

Week three looks at how to determine what equipment and materials to use in a session in-line with the client needs and AHP instructions.
Students are instructed on how to complete visual safety check of equipment, how to notify relevant staff when an issue has been identified using an organizational procedure.

Assist with the evaluation of a rehabilitation plan

Week four discusses the importance of helping an AHP to review client progress and then make changes to equipment and program as directed by therapist.
Students  learn about the role of AHA to report and document any difficulties the client is experiencing to the AHP and seek advice before continuing.

 

Students will be required to develop a task analysis and fill in a previously developed task analysis to demonstrate and apply the knowledge they have learnt in class.

Comply with supervisory requirements

This lecture covers how to deal with and report to  an AHP  a situation that is outside your scope of training as an AHA.


Participation in professional supervision is also considered.

Students are required to spend time in class developing a role-play where they can reinforce the topics taught in the last two weeks of lectures.

 

Clean and store equipment and materials

This lecture develops the understanding of a student on how to  clean equipment in-line
with manufacturers requirements.

The question of why it is important to store equipment correctly to avoid damage and ensure safety is also addressed.

Students complete a scenario using Material Safety Data Sheets on cleaning products.

Document client information

In this final lecture students look at  how good quality documentation: ensures that the right people have the right information and ensures the provision of quality services. 

Students complete a detailed case study to ensure that they can apply their knowledge to a real life scenario.

Assessment Tasks

The assessments tasks will involve -

  • AT1 - Written Assessment - Due in week 10
  • AT2 - Practical Activity/Role-Play  - Due week 9 (Students allocated a time slot starting in week 5)
  • AT3 - Placement Evidence Log - Due 3 weeks after placement

You must be deemed satisfactory in all assessment tasks to be graded competent for this course.
