Five Minutes with Chris Pan

1. What inspired you to get involved with the RMIT alumni chapter in your region?

From the beginning, I believed we could build more than a network - something deeper: a community anchored in trust, purpose, and cross-cultural collaboration. Over the past 19 years, that vision has evolved into a trusted platform where alumni across generations and industries can connect, share knowledge, and co-create meaningful impact. What continues to inspire me is the collective energy of our members (alumni, professionals, faculty, leaders and partners) who bring this community to life.

2. How has your RMIT experience shaped your career or life path?

RMIT taught me to lead with clarity, act with integrity, and think with a global mindset. Those values have shaped my journey from supply chain executives to investment governance and board leadership. Along the way, I’ve learned that success is rarely a solo pursuit. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” That principle grounded in collaboration continues to guide how I build teams, mentor talent, and foster partnerships across borders. As a RMIT industry mentor, I often return to four guiding words I share with my mentees: Mission, Passion, Collaboration, and Vision. These aren't just leadership principles; they remain a compass in both professional and personal life.

3. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to recent RMIT graduates?

Build trust before you need it. In fast-changing times, your most valuable assets are authentic relationships and your reputation. Listen actively. Give without expectation. Stay humble and consistent. These values will open more doors than credentials alone. And as you grow, remember: lead not just with ambition, but with empathy.

4. What’s exciting or unique about the alumni community in China?

It’s where global thinking meets local action. Our chapter brings together a diverse network from tech and finance to healthcare, art, and entrepreneurship, united by a shared RMIT experience. We’ve co-hosted thought leadership events with RMIT CoBL, bilateral forums with Austrade and CPA China, and peer mentoring programs across cities. More than just a network, we’re a trusted bridge between Australia and China, turning connections into collaboration and ideas into real-world outcomes.

5. If someone is visiting China, what’s one must-see or must-do experience you’d recommend?

Join one of our alumni events, you’ll feel the warmth, depth, and purpose that define our chapter. Beyond that, take time to explore the layered contrasts that make China inspiring: a morning walk along the Bund in Shanghai, a quiet tea in a Beijing hutong, or a late-night hotpot with friends in Chengdu. It’s in these moments where tradition meets innovation - that you’ll truly feel the rhythm of China.
