About peer mentoring

What is peer mentoring and who are peer mentors?

Connect with peers who are studying at RMIT and have recent experience with your course content.

Peer Mentoring is a casual, friendly, and student-led service. You can ask a couple of quick questions or build an ongoing connection both online and face-to-face.

Peer mentors are current student volunteers who have completed the course within the previous 12 months and received a grade of 75% or above.

Peer Mentors aren’t tutors, so they might not know all the answers to your questions. Instead, they will help you find information and resources, understand assessment briefs and rubrics, and help you plan for the semester.

Peer Mentors are not available for every course at RMIT. Check the list of current courses in the Vygo app under ‘Find your course’, or email peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au

What can peer mentors help with?

You can contact a mentor with questions about your course, or you can ask for general support with study skills, using the RMIT University Library, or navigating RMIT services. Mentors can help you with:

  • Understanding assessment rubrics
  • Finding academic resources
  • Practicing tutorial questions
  • Connecting with study support services such as Ask the Library
  • Exploring campus, study areas and tips and tricks
  • Encouragement and support
  • Building confidence to ask questions, speak up in lectures or contact academics
  • Breaking down tasks and identifying study goals.

What can't peer mentors help with?

What if my peer mentor can't help or doesn't respond?

Peer mentors are students, not tutors, so they may not always have the answers you need. If this happens, they can often suggest another mentor or service that can help.

You’re welcome to connect with multiple mentors—choose someone specific to your course or someone who can assist with general study questions. If a mentor isn’t the right fit or doesn’t respond, simply search for another mentor on Vygo.

For further assistance, contact the Peer Mentoring team.

Connect with a peer mentor

Connect with a peer mentor using the Vygo web app, mobile app, or both (see instructions below). You can message a peer mentor anytime, from anywhere in the world. If you are meeting a peer mentor on campus, we definitely recommend you have the app on your mobile device in case you need to message them.

Ask any peer mentor for general academic advice. For course-specific advice, your course will be listed in the app if Peer Mentors are available.

Become a mentor

Why become an RMIT peer mentor?

As a peer mentor, you’ll make a real difference in another student’s university journey, offering guidance and support when they need it most. Along the way, you’ll:

  • Develop highly sought-after skills like communication, leadership, time management, and facilitation.
  • Strengthen your knowledge of your study area while building confidence in your abilities.
  • Enhance your résumé with valuable experience that sets you apart from the crowd.

You’ll also gain access to opportunities, such as networking events, and college activities—helping you grow personally and professionally. Volunteering as a peer mentor also contributes toward the RMIT Plus program

To become a peer mentor for undergraduate and postgraduate by coursework programs, you must:

  • Be a current student with grades of 75% and above in any of the supported courses.
  • Have completed these courses in the past 12 months.
  • Be interested in developing your leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Receive an invitation from the peer mentoring team to apply to become a peer mentor.

If you meet these conditions, you will need to:

  1. Attend compulsory training on the date and time specified by the team.
  2. Obtain a voluntary or paid Working With Children Check (Melbourne mentors).

What is the time commitment?

As a peer mentor, your journey begins with attending compulsory training to prepare you for the role. The mentoring program officially runs from Week 1 to Week 11 of each semester, during which you’ll volunteer your time to support students as needed. Many mentors also choose to remain available in the Vygo app to provide additional support to students outside of these official program dates.

Please note places are limited and successful applications are not guaranteed. Email peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au if you have any questions about becoming a mentor.

Neurodiverse study buddies

The Study Buddies program is a peer mentoring initiative designed to support neurodiverse students in developing effective study habits, skills, and strategies to navigate academic challenges with confidence.

Our specially trained mentors can:

  • Meet with you on campus.
  • Share tips for staying focused during lectures and retaining key information.
  • Recommend note-taking methods and helpful apps.
  • Explain their approaches to revising and staying organized.
  • Share study routines that work for them and strategies for maintaining consistency.
  • Offer insights on breaking down tasks to manage workloads effectively.
  • Suggest favourite study spots on campus or strategies for studying at home.

To join the Study Buddies program, just log in to Vygo - rmit.vygo.app, search for the "Study Buddies" Program, and send a request to connect with a mentor.

In addition to this program, many mentors in other peer mentoring programs have shared their neurodiverse experiences on their Vygo profiles. You’re welcome to connect with as many mentors as you like to find someone who best suits your study needs. Simply search mentor profiles in Vygo, look for someone who identifies as neurodivergent, and message them directly to get started!

If you’d prefer, you can email the team at peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au telling us what kind of help you would like from a peer mentor. We might need to ask you some questions via email to find a mentor who is a good fit for you. We will then connect you with the right peer mentor in Vygo.
