Celebrating graduate Eliza Cain

Eliza not only navigated the challenges of university life but has also turned every experience into a stepping stone for personal and professional growth.

She reflects on her unique path, lessons learned, and exciting future endeavours.

“The main reason I chose RMIT was because there were no exams!" Eliza candidly shares.

However, this decision turned out to be the gateway to an educational adventure filled with vibrant city life, endless study spots, and an array of delectable food and coffee options. The heart of the city became Eliza's classroom, offering a dynamic learning environment that went beyond traditional academic settings.

One of the highlights of Eliza's academic journey was her participation in an exchange program to London. She spent three weeks at the University of Arts London, exploring the intricacies of "Communications in PR and Advertising." The experience not only broadened her understanding of communication practices but also exposed her to diverse perspectives from students worldwide.

“It was super interesting to see the difference between the study and practice of communication in Australia and the UK and I was exposed to so many interesting theories, case studies and experiences that I couldn't have had in Australia,” she said.

Outside of classes, being able to explore London with new friends from all over the world was such a unique experience. It was just so fun, and if doing a full semester overseas is too overwhelming and not for you, then a short course is the perfect opportunity, and I would recommend it to everyone.

Eliza, like many others, faced the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"COVID had a huge impact on my university experience," she notes.

Transitioning from in-person classes to remote learning posed challenges, but Eliza's resilience shone through. The experience underscored the importance of face-to-face interactions, making her appreciate the value of in-person learning when she returned to normal classes in the city.

Turning classroom concepts into real-world impact with the RMIT Communications Team

Eliza's journey with the RMIT Communications team began as part of a class assignment. Working on a project for the Interdisciplinary Communication Project course, Eliza's group collaborated with the RMIT Comms team on a campaign centred around World Teachers Day.

Little did she know that this assignment would lead to an internship opportunity and eventually a role as a casual team member. Eliza witnessed the entire lifecycle of a communication campaign, from ideation as a student to implementation as a professional. Her experience exemplifies the seamless integration of classroom learning with real-world application.

RMIT's hidden treasures: A wealth of resources and opportunities

Eliza discovered the wealth of resources and services available at RMIT, especially during her final year and internship. She highlights the Career Centre's invaluable support, emphasizing the CV checker and job listings as crucial tools for transitioning from university to the professional world.

Eliza encourages incoming students to explore opportunities beyond the classroom, emphasizing the transformative potential of experiences like exchange programs.

“My whole experience in RMIT Communications team has been extremely rewarding,” she shared.

“I have grown so much as a communications professional through seeing what I was learning in the classroom come to life.

I have been able to practise my skills and knowledge and understand what a job in communications could look like day to day.”

As Eliza embarks on the next chapter of her journey, continuing to contribute to the RMIT Communications team, she leaves behind a legacy of determination, adaptability, and a passion for turning educational experiences into real-world impact.
