When working on your assessments, it’s important to know your academic integrity responsibilities. In practical terms, academic integrity means to develop and submit for assessment your own academic work.
Some breaches of academic integrity include plagiarism (copying someone else’s work without referencing), collusion (getting help from someone when you’re not allowed to), and ghost writing (having someone write your assignment for you).
Sometimes, the inappropriate use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in your studies can result in a breach of academic integrity, which can have serious consequences for your studies, and even your career.
But how do you know what’s considered an ‘appropriate’ use of AI? Depending on your course, AI can support your studies in lots of ways. We’ve provided a few below to help you get started.
And remember, if you’re ever unsure, always check your course guide or ask your educator for guidance.
1. Explaining concepts
Ever read the instructions for an assessment task and had no idea what it’s actually asking you to do? Or maybe you’re trying to wrap your head around your class notes, but haven’t quite got the hang of all the technical slang just yet. You can ask AI to explain theories, methods, or terminology in simpler words – just like a study aid.
2. Brainstorming and planning
If you’re in the planning stages of your assessment but are feeling stuck on which approach to take, you can work with AI to generate topic ideas, outlines and question prompts to help clarify your direction and get started.
3. Test your knowledge
Got a timed assessment coming up? AI can create practice questions, flashcards and case studies to help you revise and check your understanding before the big day.
4. Proofread
For most courses, you’ll be allowed to use AI to provide a second pair of eyes over your work to check for things like spelling, grammar and punctuation.
You can use the AI-generated Writing Help tool in RMIT’s AI platform Val* to get detailed feedback on your assessments, including grammar, structure, word choice and general sentence flow.
5. Admin help
Turns out AI isn’t just a great study buddy, it’s also an excellent personal assistant! As the semester ramps up and the assignments pile on, you might feel a little overwhelmed among the competing due dates and late-night study sessions. You can use AI to create time‑management plans, checklists and weekly schedules to plan and prioritise your studies, help you meet your due dates and achieve your study goals.
