Canvas incident

RMIT has been notified of a cyber incident impacting the Canvas learning management system. Instructure, the vendor of Canvas, has confirmed that RMIT data has been impacted.

Last updated: 4pm, Monday 11 May 2026

Access to Canvas has been restored for students and staff, meaning students have full access to learning activities and resources.

What this means for students

Students can use the platform safely and securely.

As previously communicated, all students who have assessment tasks due between Friday 8 May and Friday 15 May will have a new assessment deadline of 11:59pm Friday 15 May, unless your Course Coordinator or Program Manager has emailed your RMIT student inbox with alternative advice and direction. There is no change to this advice.

Please continue to check your RMIT inbox regularly for updates.

Students are encouraged to stay alert to unusual activity and continue to practice good cybersecurity. This includes:

  • Be hypervigilant of phishing emails
  • Don’t click on any links without checking they are safe or from a trusted sender
  • Screen phone calls from unknown numbers
  • Most importantly, do not submit any personal information to strangers.

Some practical tips are available on the Cyber safety webpage and the Scams targeting students webpage.

Background information

RMIT has been notified of a cyber incident impacting the Canvas learning management system.

Canvas is a learning platform used by many universities across the world, including RMIT.

Instructure, the vendor of Canvas, has confirmed that RMIT data has been impacted. We are working with the vendor to understand any impacts as a result of this breach.

We are working together across Commonwealth and State and Territory government departments and operational agencies, with peak bodies and impacted organisations to collectively support the national response to this incident.

While access to Canvas has been restored, we understand this incident may have caused concern. Students can access a range of free services and support (see below).
