"A life-changing experience": vocational education helps Josh thrive in the lab and in life

Vocational education helped Josh discover a passion for science, build confidence and gain hands-on research experience, paving the way for a future career in science.

From 24–30 August we are celebrating National Skills Week, which highlights the powerful role vocational education (VE) plays in shaping futures, opening opportunities and supporting industries across Australia. The theme this year is 'life-changing', and for Joshua Forbes VE has been exactly that.

When Josh began the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques in 2024, his first experience of practical laboratory work planted the seed for a lifelong career in science.

Although the physical demands of the laboratory environment presented challenges due to his cerebral palsy, Josh has found the confidence, skills and resilience to flourish.

“I’ve had to accept that there are some things, such as carrying chemicals or equipment, that I will need assistance with.”

“And that’s okay. That’s life. We all have limitations.”

“Learning what I can do independently and when to ask for support has been a really important part of my VE journey.”

Josh particularly enjoyed the hands-on nature of VE, which helped confirm that science was the pathway he wanted to pursue.

“I was very unsure of what I wanted to do with myself after finishing school,” he said.

"VE really gave me direction and purpose in my life."

Josh has since progressed to the Associate Degree in Applied Science, building on the foundational laboratory skills he developed through the certificate while deepening his knowledge of science and the technical skills required in the field.

He has continued to thrive academically and professionally. One of the most rewarding experiences of his education journey has been completing an independently sourced 80-hour placement at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI), within the Muscle Bioengineering Group.

MCRI specialises in using stem cells to generate human bioengineered skeletal muscle for disease modelling and the development of new therapies for muscular disorders.

During his placement, Josh contributed to research investigating potential therapies for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD). His meaningful contribution earned praise from his supervisors and gave him valuable insight into a career in biomedical research.

The experience also enabled Josh to undertake placement in a disability-inclusive environment with the infrastructure and support needed to maximise his success – something that can be difficult to find in more traditional laboratory settings.

Josh attributes his success at MCRI to the confidence and practical skills he has grown throughout his studies.

“It was a great opportunity to put the skills I have learnt throughout my Associate Degree in Applied Science into practice in a real research and laboratory environment, and to see how far I have come.”

Through VE and exposure to cutting-edge biomedical research, Josh has broadened his career horizons and now plans to apply for the Bachelor of Science after graduating at the end of the year.

Josh says the nurturing and stimulating environment provided through VE has given him the skills and space to explore his interests and build confidence.

“I’ve had plenty of ups and downs throughout my journey, but the support I’ve received has been incredible."

“VE has been quite a life-changing experience for me.”
