RMIT unveils a future student destination in the heart of Melbourne

The State Library Exchange will bring together study spaces, industry connections, student accommodation and easy access to campus when it opens in 2029.

Imagine stepping off a train at State Library Station or Melbourne Central Station and arriving directly at a new vibrant RMIT building designed for learning, collaboration and student life.

That's the bold vision behind the State Library Exchange, a major new development currently under construction in Melbourne's CBD that will open from mid-2029.

Located above the State Library Station, the Exchange will deliver classrooms, research labs, spaces for industry collaboration, and student accommodation, all in one connected city location.

The development is enabled by RMIT's Living Places Plan and forms part of the University's long-term investment in creating flexible and accessible spaces that support our students.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron said the Exchange would strengthen opportunities for students to learn and collaborate.

“This investment marks a defining moment for RMIT’s future – a place where students, researchers and industry partners collaborate in the heart of Melbourne,” said Professor Cameron.

To help meet the needs of future students and staff, the Exchange will be co-designed with RMIT's colleges and portfolios, ensuring the spaces are flexible, adaptable and fit for purpose.

Executive Director, Property, Seamus McCartney said the new destination would create flexible environments designed around the needs of the RMIT community.

“We're designing the Exchange with students at the centre. The spaces will be flexible, welcoming and support different ways of learning, whether that's individual study, group work or connecting with industry and peers," Mr McCartney said.

Alongside learning, teaching and collaboration spaces, the development will include places to study, socialise and live, with student lounges, ground-floor retail spaces and 46 levels of student accommodation helping create a vibrant student hub above the new State Library Station.

Its location will make it easier for students, staff and industry partners to access the University, while creating new opportunities for connection and collaboration in Melbourne's civic and cultural centre.

While the Exchange won't open until 2029, it represents an important step in shaping the future of the City campus and the student experience for generations to come.
