Why RUSU is excited about the RMIT student experience

RUSU’s President Beth Shegog shares her thoughts on RMIT’s new Education Plan.

As learners we’re keenly aware of the world in which we operate, and the broad capabilities demanded of us.

And we look to our university to create meaningful experiences that guide and prepare us to be active members of society, and to approach life with a practical and critical approach.

RMIT has developed the Education Plan to outline the University’s ambitions for the student experience and the actions that will need to be taken to achieve those ambitions.

As your representative to the University, RUSU has been actively engaged in the development of the Plan, helping shape decisions and actions within to ensure the student experience is represented throughout.

We’re excited to share some of our favourite aspirations from the Plan with you, and our thoughts on the opportunities these bring for the unique RMIT student experience.

RMIT details a sustained intention of preparing students for their future careers by enhancing strong partnerships with industry.

A commitment to ensuring that industry partnered learning is part of every program means all students will have the opportunity to connect with industry prior to graduation, through classrooms that simulate workplaces, solving real world briefs with clients, meeting and hearing from experts and professionals in chosen disciplines.

Encouraging opportunities for practical learning experiences that are experiential and problem based means less traditional forms of assessment, like exams, and more engaging education activities that are workplace relevant and mirror the real-world experiences we’ll encounter.

Through the Education Plan, the University recognises the increasing diversity of our student community, both demographically and in terms of life stage, expectations and needs.

Personalised, targeted and joined-up care for all students will be necessary to deliver the flexibility and support that students will expect from RMIT throughout their lifelong learning journey.

RUSU is excited to see the University deliver a student experience which is aligned with its value of inclusion, supporting our diverse cohort of students to bring their whole selves to university.

RMIT has put together an ambitious Education Plan on behalf of students and we look forward to seeing the impact it will have on learner experience.

We’re pleased to know that RMIT intends to regularly evaluate and review the Plan, embedding continuous improvement practices into the delivery of the Plan, to ensure it remains relevant and effective in meeting the evolving needs of the student community.
