Dual Diploma students score roles with Essendon Football Club

Vocational Education graduates Ava Draisey and Anton Amalfi have secured full-time roles working with Essendon Football Club following their placements with the Essendon Education Academy, now in its fourth successful year.

The world of work is evolving fast, and Dual Diploma of Business, Leadership and Management students Ava and Anton are ready for it. Over the last year, through Essendon Education Academy’s innovative approach and RMIT’s commitment to applied learning, they’ve gained skills, confidence, and now full-time roles with the Essendon Football Club (EFC).

In partnership and co-designed by RMIT and EFC, the Essendon Education Academy (EEA) provides a unique education offering that integrates students into a high-performing sporting organisation, allowing them to learn hands-on leadership and business skills from RMIT teachers at the NEC Hangar in Tullamarine.

The EAA cohort launch headfirst into experience, accomplishing 100 hours of placement supporting Essendon Football Club home games and working across different teams and partner networks behind the scenes. In addition to graduates leaving with direct entry into RMIT's Bachelor of Business, students also have additional opportunities to undertake further development programs and placements within their time at EEA, such as on-field football skills, game coaching, sports business and facilitating networking opportunities.

“I have loved my experience with the EEA. It has been amazing to make friends with people who have similar interests and learn in an elite sporting environment,” reflects Ava Draisey.

“I have learnt so much from all the practical experience students are able to gain through the program. One of my favourite placements was working with the club’s AFLW team in an ongoing property role. The amount of close access to the football club was an awesome surprise,” she said.

Anton Amalfi, a mature aged student with a trades and HR background, moved from NSW to pursue this opportunity and feels his experience with the EEA is one of his most rewarding achievements.

Person biting medal Anton Amalfi has started his new role within the Essendon Football Club.

“I was fortunate enough to be a part of Essendon's biggest events throughout the year, ranging from placements on ANZAC Day right through to the Crichton Medal (Essendon's Best and Fairest). Alongside those placements, my highlight of the year was my on-going placement within the Victorian Wheelchair Football League program, where I assisted the Community department deliver their wheelchair AFL program for the duration of the season, culminating in an exciting Premiership win for Essendon.”

Annually, the EFC offers two standout graduates the opportunity to take on graduate roles following their completion of the Dual Diploma. This year Anton and Ava were chosen for their dedication and hard work.

Both were recognised by staff within the EFC as an exemplary of industry excellence and dedication, as both embraced every opportunity provided within the course and were two of only four students personally requested by the Club’s Head of Fundraising to lead the Major Raffle for the Crichton Medal this year.

“We are told early on that Essendon takes on two graduate students each year, and from day one that became my target. Throughout the program I had the chance to work across multiple EFC departments and those placements further confirmed that this was the environment I wanted to grow in,” said Anton, who recently began his new role as the EFC's Commercial and Administrative Assistant, working across the Commercial Department and Office of the CEO.

Over the last year, Anton has clocked over 173 placement hours across 10 departments, authentically connecting with industry partners, staff, and his peers, ultimately displaying exceptional communication, teamworking and capability for his new role.

“Anton’s ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively has stood out from his first day at EEA. Drawing on his life experience, he has been an exceptional team player and communicator. His approachable nature, thoughtful questions, and genuine willingness to help (without expectation of recognition) have consistently elevated those around him and enhanced the experience of every event he’s supported,” said the Essendon Education Academy Manager, Kirstin Hannah.

For Ava, this next step is a dream come true, stepping into the role of Merchandise Coordinator, working within the EFC Consumer Department.

“I am just really looking forward to being able to work in an elite sporting club and to make an impact,” she said.

Kirstin Hannah said “Ava exemplifies everything the EEA and RMIT aspire to nurture in their students: initiative, creativity, professionalism, and genuine passion for learning. From her first day in the program, Ava has consistently demonstrated maturity, combining her calm and friendly nature with a strong drive to develop her skills, contribute to the sporting industry, and represent vocational education with pride.”
