Research Plus

The Research Plus program offers PhD and Masters by Research candidates a range of workshops, seminars and short courses to build research knowledge and skills.

The Research Plus program provides co-curricular training opportunities to all PhD and Masters by Research candidates at RMIT University. These offerings aim to build knowledge, skills and capabilities appropriate to each candidate’s professional development needs across the Research Plus capability framework. 

The Research Plus program includes a wide variety of flagship events, workshops, seminars and self-directed online training modules. The full program can be browsed below. Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates can register for workshops and access additional co-curricular training resources via the Research Plus platform.

Thesis Boot Camp

Writing a thesis is no small task. This two-day workshop is designed to help you battle through writer’s block, overcome thesis fatigue and progress your manuscript quickly.

Shut Up and Write! is a regular two-hour get-together, where you prioritise writing over everything else.

Three Minute Thesis Competition

An academic competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates to explain their thesis and its significance in just three minutes.

Research Plus platform

Through the Research Plus platform current HDR candidates can:

  • find and register for workshops and access other co-curricular training resources
  • complete questionnaires to identify which skills and capabilities they need to develop
  • track their progress against specific goals and broader Research Plus capabilities 

Research Plus platform access

The Research Plus platform is only accessible to current HDR candidates. You will need to ensure that you are logged in via your RMIT student account to access the platform.

Are you new to RMIT or forgotten your student login? Find out how to Change or reset your RMIT ID and password.

To log in to the Research Plus platform you must use your student email address (eg. s1234567@student.rmit.edu.au), not your email alias (eg. joe.smith@student.rmit.edu.au). Find out more about your student email address and alias.

If you are already logged in to your browser using a staff account or a student email alias, you will need to either:

  • Log out of your other account, and log back into using your student email (eg. s1234567@student.rmit.edu.au) and password; or
  • Open the Research Plus platform web app using a Private or Incognito browser window and then log in using your student email and password

Research Plus capability framework

The Research Plus program is organised using five research capability categories. These were developed by drawing on candidate feedback on learning priorities, existing capability frameworks, and key skills looked for by academic and non-academic employers of HDR graduates. 

Expand all sections

This training category involves the topics of planning and project managing for your HDR project and for research more generally. It includes being aware of, and meeting, official and unofficial milestones. You will also find orientation sessions and training for organisational skills.

This broad category enables you to acquire skills and access resources to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of day-to-day work on your research. You will find diverse topics including digital and data literacy, information and communication technology skills, research ethics and integrity, critical and creative thinking, and understanding your contribution to knowledge.

This training category includes communicating in written and verbal form with academic audiences and the broader public. You will find seminars, workshops and resources to help you with academic writing, getting published and presenting research. Look in this category for our flagship bootcamp events and for Three Minute Thesis training.

This category includes understanding the real world impacts of your research, and co-designing research with external stakeholders for positive impact. You will also find resources to help you with outreach to industry, government and the community.

This category focuses on developing interpersonal and other workplace skills, helping you to build a career inside or outside of academia. This includes working with your supervisor and working in an academic environment. Additional topics include teamwork more broadly, leadership, networking, cultural intelligence and professional effectiveness.
