Real-world experience meets team spirit at UniSport Nationals

As excitement builds for UniSport Nationals, RMIT students are preparing not just to compete but to contribute. From media to athlete support, students are gaining hands-on experience through Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements and volunteer roles that connect classroom learning with real-world practice.

Media students behind the lens

For Master of Media student Margaritha Jesslyn, joining the Sports Media Team is a chance to apply her skills in digital storytelling, audience engagement, and content strategy.

“I’m really excited to capture all the amazing athletes and the wide variety of sports throughout the event,” Margaritha says. She looks forward to sharing “behind-the-scenes highlights [that] help show the student experience in a more authentic and engaging way.”

Her work on reels and managing the Rupert the Redback socials supports her studies, allowing her to apply technical skills in filming, editing, and creating short-form content in a fast-paced, event-based media environment.

Building skills through WIL placements

Saif Mosafeer’s interest in a WIL placement with RMIT Active began after photographing his cousin’s soccer team, as he saw first-hand how this environment “tests if you can capture a specific moment during a fast-paced and intense event,” he explains. His love of sport made content creation for RMIT Active a natural fit.

At UniSport Nationals, Saif is excited to develop his agility in adjusting camera settings, anticipating player movements, and choosing shots that support a compelling story. “It is up to me which style and emotion I wish to convey, whether that's emotional, ecstatic, or wholesome!” he says.

His goal is to capture “crucial moments which highlight the diversity and excitement that is present” while helping grow the Redback and RMIT Active community.

Supporting athletes: volunteer roles with impact

RMIT’s fourth- and fifth-year Osteopathy and Chiropractic students will gain valuable industry experience through volunteer roles that align with their studies. The Medic Team, for example, will provide on-the-ground support to athletes throughout the competition.

Fifth-year Osteopathy student Ryan Clegg is returning to UniSport Nationals as a sports trainer, having previously competed in 2023 and volunteered in 2024.

“Being a trainer at Nationals will help my communication skills as I’m trying to build a relationship with a lot of new people over a short period of time. Treating more acute injuries will give me great experience as it’s something I don’t see as much in my clinical experience,” Ryan explains.

He looks forward to making new connections with similar people while being able to “learn off other aspiring health professionals who have different experiences and different skill sets,” he shares.

More than a competition

WIL placements and volunteer roles at this year’s UniSport Nationals give students practical experience, build confidence, and open future career pathways. It’s a celebration of teamwork and learning, and a reminder that the sidelines are just as important as the spotlight.
