First Semester 101: Finding your community at RMIT

Your time at RMIT isn’t just about studying – it’s also about discovering your interests and connecting with people. Whether you’re into sport, creativity, culture, or just spending time with fellow students, there are plenty of ways to find your community and make your experience your own.

Make friends with Kirrip

Kirrip is a student-led program that runs a range of activities, from relaxed sessions where you can unwind and have a chat, to group social events including trivia, karaoke, or friendly competitions with games. Kirrip also offers occasional outings around Melbourne and regional Victoria, giving you the chance to see new places with other students.

Join a club or society

If you have an interest, hobby, or want to try something new, there’s a good chance there’s a club for you. Run by students, clubs span academic disciplines, cultural communities, creative interests, gaming, sport, social causes, and more. Clubs usually run regular meetups, workshops, and social events, giving you a consistent way to see familiar faces and feel part of a community.

Explore the wide range of RMIT clubs and societies here.

Find your club at Campus Fest!

With more than 120 groups taking part, Campus Fest (4 & 5 March) is a great chance to chat with different clubs, see what catches your interest, and sign up to something that feels right for you.

Join social sport or represent RMIT

Throughout the year, there are plenty of social sport competitions, free play sessions, and other fitness activities where you can participate at your own level and meet people along the way.

You can keep an eye on upcoming health and fitness events here.

Looking to compete in your favourite sport? Consider joining the Redbacks, RMIT’s representative teams. As a Redback athlete, you can compete against other universities across Australia and internationally while being part of a close-knit sporting community.

Take part in creative communities

Creative programs at RMIT offer another way to meet people through shared interests and projects. Across the year, you can join hands-on workshops, student-led creative sessions, collaborative art projects, and exhibitions. Many activities are designed to be flexible, so you can drop in between classes, try something new, and connect with other students.

You can learn more about our creative communities and check out upcoming exhibitions, activations, and events here.

Cultural, spiritual and community spaces

If you are looking to connect through culture, identity, or faith, there are dedicated spaces and programs across our Melbourne campuses.

RMIT Chaplaincy provides welcoming spaces on campus, as well as free and confidential support. Regular activities such as meditation sessions and prayer gatherings offer opportunities to pause, reflect, and connect with others. Support is open to students of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds.

The Ngarara Willim Centre is a dedicated community space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with locations at all Melbourne campuses. These centres include study areas, lounges, and cultural programs, and are places to connect with community and feel at home on campus.
