1. What did you study at RMIT and what attracted you to that program?
I studied a Bachelor Fashion at RMIT graduating in 2016. I was attracted to this course because it was world renowned. I wasn’t sure of the exact job I wanted after completing my degree, however I knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry.
2. What is your business all about?
Earthy, deep tones and classic styles with a sense of elevated comfort drive the design of Sanct. All Sanct pieces are plastic-free and are designed to be go-to pieces for everyday wear.
Sanct is the brainchild of Danielle Abery, who left commercial fashion to start her own label when she felt drawn to create a more ethical fashion practice. Sanct’s website provides a full breakdown of the materials, including trimmings, that have gone into making that item, including the name of the supplier and the country of origin.
Only 100% natural deadstock fabrics or GOTS certified organic fabrics make their way into Sanct collections.
All garments are available in sizes 8 to 30, with custom sizing available as well! 100% of Sanct products are made in Australia & accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia.
3. Where do you see your business in 10 years’ time?
In 10 years I see Sanct being a renowned and loved brand in the Australian fashion landscape, with a flagship store in Brunswick or Fitzroy. I see the brand having a loyal following particularly in Melbourne where clients will be able to come into an atelier and try on pieces or be fitted for a made-to-order piece. .
4. How has studying at RMIT prepared you to run your business?
RMIT kick started my practical skills in pattern making and sewing. My high school didn’t have a textiles program so I had studied Design and Technology under a woodwork teacher, making dresses mostly under my own tutelage for my VCE.
RMIT was a whole new world learning from scratch how to make things properly.
I now make most Sanct pieces myself and handle all custom tailoring so those skills have been invaluable.
5. What advice would you have offered yourself when you first started your business?
I would say don’t compare your practice to other brands, you have to carve your own path and create a practice that makes you excited to go to work every day.
It’s also ok (and normal) to grow slowly and sustainably.
6. Since you've been sewing from such a young age, what was the very first thing you made? And if you still had it, would you wear it now??
Haha I used to steal my parents bed sheets to make dresses (no, they were not thrilled about this). And no, I wouldn’t wear 11 year old Danielle’s designs today, my techniques have much improved. But I do still have my formal dress which I made when I was 16.
