PhD Scholarship in Multilayered Safety Clothing for Personal Protective Equipment

Develop potential material solutions for firefighters’ protective clothing systems with a high level of fire protection and improved thermal comfort.

The ARC funded project will create multifunctional fabric designs & engineering techniques integrating improved heat and flame protection, comfort and smart features into multilayered personal protective garments.

Two doctoral scholarships are available for outstanding applicants to work on this multidisciplinary research project funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC). The three-year project will

  1. Study protective textile materials against fire
  2. Identify and develop material solutions with specific characteristics using textile functional design
  3. Demonstrate practical solutions for enhanced protective clothing systems. The research will use RMIT’s new flame mannequin.

The successful applicant will have good lab skills and a background in fibre technology, textile chemistry and/or material science. It is desirable that the applicant have training relevant to fibre materials or work experience in the textile/garment industry.

This project will be carried out in collaboration with local sportswear manufacturer Ventou Garment Technology with periodic trials in their pilot plant facility enabling rapid translation and industrial implementation so that it may be deployed into the firefighting services sector.

The research supervision team include:

$31,260 per annum for three years.
