Ordering coffee on campus? Use Green Caffeen

Reusable cup service Green Caffeen launched at RMIT last week. Find out how it works and how you can help reduce waste, one flat white at a time.

More than one billion standard single-use cups are thrown away in Australia each year, with most ending up in landfill or the ocean because they can’t be recycled.

RMIT is committed to reducing waste and pollution as part of our Circular Economy Plan, which is why we’ve partnered with Green Caffeen to help our community ditch disposable cups for good.

Green Caffeen is free to use and works like borrowing a library book – simply check out a reusable cup when ordering your coffee and return it when you're finished.

Sarah Hollingworth, Chief Project Officer at Green Caffeen, was at the launch last Thursday and said it's encouraging to see RMIT cafes embrace the service.

“We're creating a network of cafes across RMIT.”

“This makes it really easy for coffee lovers to pick up a cup at a participating cafe and swap or drop it off at another,” Sarah said.

RUSU Sustainability Representative, Ella Bryne, said Green Caffeen is a simple way for every student to make a big impact.

If you're someone who forgets to bring your reusable cup to campus, Green Caffeen is right there!

“It's a super easy system for students to use, so you'll never be stuck using a single-use coffee cup again," Ella said.

How to use Green Cafeen

  • Download the Green Caffeen app
  • Use the app’s cafe finder to locate a participating cafe
  • When ordering, scan the code via the app to check out a Green Caffeen cup
  • Enjoy your coffee, and drop off your used cup at any participating cafe next time.

All Green Caffeen cups are BPA free and made from recycled plastic.
