Celebrating graduate Duy Minh Tran

Making the move from Vietnam to Australia, advertising graduate Minh discovered a new academic passion and a second home right here in Melbourne.

Inspired to embark on an international academic journey, Minh made the leap from Vietnam to Australia to pursue higher education.

Minh's journey began in 2015 when he made the move to Melbourne, taking into account the short travel time back to Vietnam and the number of personal connections he already had here.

Before coming to RMIT, Minh had started a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology, at Melbourne University. It was during this time that he discovered his interest in media and communications, inspiring him to redirect his academic focus to follow his newfound passion.

Academic growth through practical learning

When searching for his dream media and communications course, he landed on RMIT due to its reputation for its outstanding practical and industry-focused approach to learning and teaching.

Coming from a very academic background, I could not have imagined how practical a university course could be. The Bachelor of Advertising program at RMIT surprised me the most with how quickly and visibly I saw my skills grow throughout the course.

Minh found that he was acquiring valuable skills in advertising and putting them to practise, rather than a cumulation of theoretical knowledge.

“I initially had modest expectations regarding my personal growth but by the end of it I could see a significant improvement in my skills and understanding of the advertising industry,” he said.

Making Australia home

In 2023, Australia was lucky to welcome Minh as a formal citizen as by now Melbourne has begun to feel like his second home.

“My favourite aspect of living in Australia is the weather and various landscapes. It's not uncommon for a state like Victoria to experience four seasons in a day. The diverse landscapes, from beaches to mountains and even snow-covered peaks, offer many choices for an adventurer and nature lover like me,” he shared.

Being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Minh found Australia to be open and welcoming which initially inspired the move across the globe.

“For me, becoming a citizen was simply a formalisation of the fond relationship I had developed with this nation and the local people around me,” he said.

This year Minh seamlessly integrated into the working world, securing a job part-time as a digital account coordinator. He plans to take a break from university and transition into full-time work next year.
