From doubts to dreams: How Peer Mentoring boosted a student’s confidence and academic performance

Hear from RMIT Peer Mentor Nidhi about how peer mentoring boosted her confidence and academic performance.

Nidhi is a post-graduate student, studying for a Master of Finance after several years in the workforce.

Like many other students, Nidhi found the transition to study overwhelming and faced several challenges during her first semester.

“I’m an international student, so it was very difficult.”

Struggling to stay on top of her courses and feeling overwhelmed, Nidhi decided to seek assistance from a peer mentor.

Nidhi found out about Peer Mentoring through a post shared by a course academic, and since connecting with her mentor, she has never looked back. Nidhi found recognition and empathy from her mentor, who understood where Nidhi was in her journey.

“I bugged her the entire time - she was a really great person to guide me,” shared Nidhi.

Her mentor not only unpacked concepts and shared effective study strategies but also provided emotional support, building Nidhi’s confidence and motivation. “She became a really good friend.”

As a result, Nidhi experienced not only a significant improvement in her grades and a boost to her academic confidence, but also found a sense of community.

Inspired by her firsthand experience of being a mentee, Nidhi is now giving back and has become a Peer Mentor herself. Excited about her new role, Nidhi looks forward to empowering others to conquer challenges and achieve academic excellence.

Peer Mentors can help students find support and forge friendships that foster a sense of belonging and enhance the university experience.
