For Kash, Israel and Menuki RMIT’s program has been a fantastic experience filled with highlights, growth and opportunity.

Kash’s experience

I've been deeply involved in the RMIT community since the day I started university. Through my involvement in the student union, university clubs and events, and campus life, I've developed a genuine connection to RMIT and everything it stands for. What I love most about the University is its people, culture, diversity, and genuine care shown to both students and staff. When I saw the opportunity to join the graduate program, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. Having been heavily involved from a student perspective, I was excited by the opportunity to learn more about the staff side of the University, understand how the organisation operates, and contribute to the work that helps shape the experiences of students and employees alike. The program offered the perfect chance to combine my passion for RMIT with my curiosity to learn and grow.

For me, the highlight has been the breadth of experience the program provides – the privilege of having access to connections and learning opportunities that have accelerated both my personal and professional growth.

One of the most valuable opportunities is the rotations through the teams I’ve had the opportunity to work with. I've experienced different ways of working and learnt from professionals who have broadened my perspective and understanding of where my interests lie. If you have a genuine interest in a project or initiative, you are encouraged to put your hand up and get involved.

On top of that, I've valued being part of a graduate cohort. Having a network of peers to share the experience and connect socially has created a strong sense of community and support throughout the program.

My biggest piece of advice is to focus on being yourself and showcasing the experiences and transferable skills that make you unique. RMIT places a strong emphasis on culture, collaboration, and values, so it's important to demonstrate how you work with others, contribute to a team, and align with what RMIT stands for.

Most importantly, don't let self-doubt stop you from applying. The only opportunities you're guaranteed to miss are the ones you never apply for. Focus on telling your story, highlighting your strengths, and showing your genuine interest in the impact you want to make.

Menuki’s experience

I discovered the program when searching RMIT’s Career Centre website for part-time and casual work opportunities. I was both surprised and excited when I saw the advertisement because this was the first time RMIT had run a graduate program. Having been an RMIT student myself, I learnt and grew so much during my time at RMIT, so the opportunity to give back to the same institution while continuing to learn and gain professional experience really appealed to me.

One of the coolest parts has been seeing RMIT from the other side. As a student, I used many of the platforms and services provided, and now I get to see the people, technology, and processes behind them. I understand the work that goes into creating a positive experience for students, and that perspective has been particularly meaningful to me.

The graduate program has delivered many exciting challenges. One challenge has been the steep learning curve involved in picking up new concepts and technologies within a limited amount of time. I’ve really enjoyed pushing myself in that environment because it has challenged me to learn quickly, step outside my comfort zone, and continuously improve.

A highlight was speaking at an ITS Quarterly Planning Playback session. During this session, I was able to bring the student voice into the conversation for the first time. It was a great experience and a valuable opportunity.

My biggest piece of advice would be to be yourself. You don’t have to change who you are to stand out.

I would encourage applicants to ask themselves, “Why do I want to work at RMIT?” and really think about the answer. Why RMIT? What is it about the University that motivates you? Once you understand your own “why”, it becomes much easier to communicate where you want to go and what you can bring to the organisation.

Israel’s experience

I applied because I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn and contribute to complex transformation projects and initiatives, giving me early exposure to how large university systems function. I also thought the program’s structured rotations would create opportunities to test my skills in a big company setting whilst expanding my work network.

One highlight has been contributing to team projects that have improved university processes, such as timetabling. I found this piece of work particularly fulfilling. Working with multiple teams involved in this process and making meaningful and impactful changes has been satisfying.

Try to make as many meaningful work connections as you can. I have found that these connections can lead to valuable career opportunities and professional development.
