STAFF PROFILE
Dr David Chesworth
David Chesworth is an internationally recognised artist and composer with a practice that is based on experimentation, collaboration, and interdisciplinary research covering a broad spectrum of interests.
As a cross-disciplinary artist, composer and researcher, David has worked collaboratively and creatively in a wide range of fields, including visual art, music, screen-based media, performance and installation for the public domain, major museums and artist run initiatives. As a leading artist who represents Australia internationally, his practice involves video artwork production, composition, sound design, text and spoken-word.
Recently David has collaborated with Sonia Leber creating several large-scale video artworks and installations including for the Venice and Sydney Biennales.
David's practice-based research led him to his recent PhD investigation into ontologies of listening that included a case study of artists' rooms at Dia:Beacon in Upstate New York, featuring Robert Smithson, Robert Ryman, Max Neuhaus and Gerhard Richter. The research explored concepts that elucidate how framed experiences of sound and duration (qualitatively endured), enabled experiential insights not readily available through spatial and visual modalities.
David was recently Associate Investigator at ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CABAH), where, with Sonia Leber, he completed 'Where Lakes Once Had Water', a significant research-based art/science artwork that investigates the Centre's climate research themes.
