Ian Burns is a sessional teacher within the VBE Business School and teaches Logistics and International Business. Ian has a wealth of knowledge and industry experience and engagement.
Ian Burns is a fully qualified Logistician with thirty years’ experience working throughout Australia in manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and distribution, retail and transport. Ian is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia and is associated with the other major Logistics Associations as well.
Ian has been working in Logistics education for over 15 years and has developed training and assessment materials that are used throughout Australia. Ian experience includes working alongside the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000. Ian has qualifications in Teaching, Management and Logistics and teaches knowledgably and with passion for his industry. Ian organises site and industry visits, and professional events and is sought after as both an Industry speaker and event manager.
Ian’s primary experience includes Logistics, Project and Change Management, Supply Chain design and Supplier Relationship Management and Business.
Ian has had several articles published and continues to write for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and for his own LinkedIn page.

Ian Burns started his career in Newcastle NSW as an apprentice in the Steel Manufacturing Industry where he developed skills in large scale manufacturing and metallurgy. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked in various roles including production and transport scheduling, purchasing operations and inventory and warehouse management and other Logistics operation and managerial roles. Whilst working in logistics, Ian undertook further training through local training providers.
As part of his studies, he participated in a research project into developing opportunities for local businesses to benefit from the year 2000 Sydney Olympic Games Project. Whilst in the Aluminium industry, he worked on successful projects that included Lean Logistics and Sustainability, Warehouse design and management, Supply Chain and Inventory restructuring and various Information Technology and Safety related assignments. In addition to these projects, Ian held tenure on the Board of Directors for the Aluminium Smelter’s Superannuation fund where there was $AU40 Million under management.
Ian’s passion is to assist a company to upskill its workforce and generate positive change. He has worked in heavy and light manufacturing companies, food processing, automotive, technologies, fashion companies as well as in mainstream logistics and distribution organisations.
In addition to his teaching duties, he is affiliated with several professional Logistics bodies in Victoria and has had his experience formally recognised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia with the award of a Chartered Membership.
Ian’s voluntary duties include assisting in Logistics education, event management and CILTA representative roles. Ian is the manager of the Annual CILTA Logistics Conversation Events that have been running since 2012.
