Global Dialogue Series: how do we shape the next generation of leaders?
The next generation of leaders are operating in a borderless, technologically enabled environment. They are challenging old structures and traditional pathways to leadership. How do universities support this new generation in developing the skills they will need to tackle the complex problems of today's rapidly changing global environment?

PROFESSOR MACINTYRE SPEAKS: “So Andy, great discussion in there. Give us a quick sense of what ‘open source leadership’ means for you.”

ANDY COXALL SPEAKS: “Sure, so we worked with a 1000 young people, 1000 young leaders across the world and asked them what’s the leadership they feel they need to success in this VUCA world that we’re in today and what are their aspiration as leaders. Who do they want to be and how do they want to lead? And so we worked with them to articulate that and to come up with a leadership model off the back of that, which is very much their aspirations and their commitments to leadership in the world today.”
PROFESSOR MACINTYRE SPEAKS: “So this is fascinating. So it’s not just driven by what do employers want, what’s coming through here is reciprocal, complementary desire among young people for compatible sorts of capabilities.”
ANDY COXALL SPEAKS: “Absolutely and they’re not the kind of things you’d expect. It’s not sort of core skills around listening and communication, it’s saying things like ‘we’ll be interconnected, that we’re going to collectively work together to bring everyone up and not just work for our own individual gain and success.’ So they’re real sorts of promises of behaviour and commitments to each other and to the world about how they want to lead.”

PROFESSOR MACINTYRE SPEAKS: “So Kritica, we’ve been having a fabulous discussion in there. I’m interested to follow up with you on what’s your sense of what you, your peers, your cohort are looking for, hoping for in terms of leadership skills and capabilities.”

KRITICA CHOUDHARY SPEAKS: “I think we’re looking for something that inspires them, something that brings them a lot of energy in them. Anything that has an intersection of value and purpose. And to have a fulfilling career that’s really important I think. To enjoy the work that you do and to be surrounded by people that respect you, who understand your perspective.”

PROFESSOR MACINTYRE SPEAKS: “We’ve just been having a great discussion about leadership. Give us a sense of what are the core skills that we’re hearing from employers that graduates need to have these days.”
TEXT ON SCREEN: Dr Darien Rossiter, Consultant, Office of the DVC Education, RMIT.
DR DARRIEN ROSSITER SPEAKS: “So there’s common skills that are around digital literacy and communication, that’s always strong. There’s things around, I guess what you can see as human capabilities, which are around transferable skills, which are around the grit, the resilience, some innovation and creativity is important. Yes, leadership, but leadership needs to be defined. We’ve looked at something which we call skills and capabilities. We’re trying to build experiences and programs around them and we’re also trying to embed them into our formal curriculum.”
