Accessibility at RMIT

At RMIT, in terms of being a student, in terms of accessibility, the equitable learning service team has been really amazing. I've been able to study throughout my cancer treatment, throughout mental health issues and chronic illness.

As a staff member, RMIT has helped me by being a flexible working environment.

So, when I'm sick or if I need a doctor's appointment I'm able to do that and put my health first.

Having an accessible workplace for everyone in the future would mean that people don't have to identify if they don't want to. And that the workplace they are coming into will just be accessible from the start.

I'm given the opportunity to work one day a week at home, because not only do I have a disability, but I also live an hour and a bit out.

This year, I had a number of personal situations happen. Unfortunately, my father became sick and my nanna passed away. But the team has just been absolutely fantastic in supporting me through it. And also, helping me with flexible arrangements.

When the Workplace Adjustments team working very closely with ITS enabled Bluetooth capability, which means I can sync with the hearing aid. And that means that I am able to engage the community once more.

Technology such as Yammer, Office 365, accessibility around those specific spaces enabled visual accessibility needs to be met.

And most importantly, hearing. Sometimes you can't hear in meetings, but the conversation flows on into collaboration spaces like Yammer. So, you are able to read and participate and not be feeling left out.

So, that kind of inclusive experience using the technology smartly has been to RMIT's cred.

RMIT is doing a lot to support accessibility and how it has impacted me is the way the Vice-Chancellor was appointed five years ago.

And it has reshaped the way we look at accessibility.

And so, it has really enabled me to be more courageous and more gutsy in an advocacy way.

What has surprised me is since 2001 how far-- how things have dramatically changed through very clear action.

- Press the left or right arrow to decrease and increase the volume.
Full screen
- Navigate to the full screen button using the Tab or Shift + Tab keyboard combination.
- Press the Spacebar or Enter key to toggle between full screen video and normal size.
