MARTIN BEAN SPEKAS:…to announce that we'll be exploring the creation of a new college of Vocational Education which would be led by a new Pro Vice-Chancellor. VE has been a part of RMIT's DNA since we opened our doors more than a hundred and thirty-two years ago, under the motto of a skilled hand and a cultivated mind.
With that practical learning was embraced in our identity and today it continues to be a big part of what makes us special and how we prepare our students for life and work.
Importantly the new college of VE will build on the connected pathways we value together we're putting VE, HE, future skills and RMIT Online at the fingertips of our students, providing them a mix of options and choices tobuild their lifelong learning portfolio.
So, it's great to be here to talk about that with you Belinda - so, there's been talk about having a VE college for a long time in RMIT, so why now?
BELINDA TYNAN SPEAKS: I think it's probably two things that stick out for me one of them is the current regulatory environment which we sit in both federally and at a state level and then also internally our own aspiration, to be a bigger better greater more fabulous, vocational education school and over the last 18 months or so we've been really focusing a lot of energy in that space, so I think when you put those two things together we've come to that logical point, you know it really sits comfortably with that 132 years of DNA of where we started, so it's a convergence…
MARTIN BEAN SPEAKS: It's pretty exciting, I know I'm looking forward to in sort of my executive and working with the university to be able to both manage the complexity but also really put us in a fantastic position to grow moving forward as well so it makes sense. So, what do you think the next steps are going to be how's all of this gonna play out do you think?
BELINDA TYNAN SPEAKS: Well look it's not going to happen tomorrow, this is a serious undertaking and we need to really look at what we're currently doing now and how that aligns with our aspiration; there will be lots of opportunity for people to have conversations with us about what that future looks like and how it will actually work. As far as I'm concerned though for the moment everything just continues as it does, you know and as we travel through a process as we do here at RMIT, everyone can be engaged with it.
MARTIN BEAN SPEAKS: Yeah, it makes make sense so if I want to be engaged and I'm watching this video what how can I do that, what do I do if I want to have my say or get involved?
BELINDA TYNAN SPEAKS: Well look I think over the next few weeks it's really important that you connect through with the Deans of the various schools we've got because they've got all that information at their fingertips about how we're going to start a process of engaging the whole community and then at the end of November, we have this fantastic Town Hall which I expect that most of the VE community will be at and then from there we'll have some formal ways in which all the schools departments and disciplines can get engaged in this conversation.
MARTIN BEAN SPEAKS: Great well look, it's a terrific announcement, I want to thank you, and everybody involved I'm looking forward to it and good luck with next steps.
BELINDA TYNAN SPEAKS: Thank you, Martin.
