Help shape our Anti-Racism Commitment Statement and action plan

RMIT is taking a significant step forward in our commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive university.

At RMIT, we take great pride in our rich, multi-cultural and multi-faith community. We stand firmly against racism in all forms and remain deeply committed to fostering an environment where every member of our community feels safe, respected, and a true sense of belonging

To support the development of RMIT’s Anti-Racism Commitment Statement and action plan, a series of listening sessions and yarning circles will be held for students in August 2025.

These sessions will be facilitated by MindTribes, specialists with extensive experience in developing anti-racism frameworks, conducting comprehensive audits and leading culturally safe consultation processes.

The sessions are designed to explore and understand the experience of racism, religious discrimination, and cultural exclusion within our diverse student community.

The sessions have been carefully designed and will be facilitated by an experienced professional, with psychological and cultural safety prioritised throughout.

Participants will be invited to share their own experiences or reflections on how these issues show up within RMIT, whether through personal encounters or observations of barriers, behaviours, gaps in inclusion, respect, and fair treatment for racially and culturally diverse individuals.

Based on lived/living experience, students can choose between a range of online sessions, where your anonymity will be maintained.

Students that participate in a 90-minute online session will receive a $40 Coles e-gift card.

About RMIT’s Anti-Racism Commitment Statement and three-year action plan

RMIT is developing an Anti-Racism Commitment Statement and a three-year action plan to address both systemic and interpersonal racism and religious discrimination within our community, and beyond.

RMIT’s Anti-Racism Commitment Statement will affirm our values and responsibilities, while the action plan will outline practical steps to drive sustained change.

RMIT Student Union President, Finbar Bray said the work was critical to fostering a sense of belonging for students.

“Our strength lies in our truly diverse and multicultural community, so it’s crucial that inclusion and respect are at the heart of everything we do,” Finbar said.

“Through this work, we want to ensure every student, regardless of faith, culture or race, feels welcome and valued as an important part of the RMIT community."

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, Professor Sherman Young said meaningful change is driven by listening and acting on the voices of those directly impacted.

“We encourage students to participate in the listening sessions. Your insights and experiences are invaluable in shaping our commitment and action plan. By engaging in these discussions, you will help us create a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone at RMIT,” he said.

The Anti-Racism Commitment Statement and action plan is expected to be launched by the end of the year.
