How Brooke landed a law job before graduation

How Brooke landed a law job before graduation

Taking initiative, sitting up front, and never being afraid to ask questions are Brooke Gosbell’s top tips when it comes to landing a law job at one of the Big Four.

When Brooke was 11, she decided she wanted to be Prime Minister. After googling the most common degrees held by politicians, she set her sights on law. By around 15, she decided that being a politician wasn’t for her, but her law intentions remained.

She gravitated towards law due to its potential to help people, something she’s focused on during her time at RMIT. Brooke began assisting students as a Peer Mentor after feeling grateful for the support she received in first year.

The most rewarding experience was just giving other students space to feel unsure and then be able to help them out.

Brooke was awarded a Dean’s Merit Award for property law as an embodiment of her academic achievement.

Uplifting marginalised groups

In 2023, Brooke was selected to be the first ever Queer representative of the RMIT Law Students’ Society (LSS). The role was created to uplift the voices of LGBTIQA+ students. Brooke was able to participate in industry-led round table events with other Queer representatives.

It was daunting, I was only 18 and in charge of setting up an entire portfolio. I’m proud of myself for persevering and I’m grateful that the role has continued this year.

Brooke held this position until October 2024 when she was elected Vice-President. She pushed for, and successfully helped to implement, a free membership tier to the LSS, enabling a 100+ member increase from the previous year.

“A free membership tier had been playing on my mind since I joined, but it was important to the entire executive committee. We also lowered the cost of our other tiers to facilitate further accessibility.”

Taking every opportunity

Brooke encourages students to sit near the front, show interest and ask questions to uncover more professional opportunities.

“This has allowed me to connect with various Principal Lawyers, Partners and other prominent figures. The worst thing that can happen when you ask to connect or ask about opportunities is that you’ll be told ‘no’.”

Brooke acquired an internship with KPMG through an advert on LinkedIn. She encourages other students not to be discouraged by not having prior experience when applying for internships.

Experience is what internships are for. I worked as a swim teacher before my internship, and I was able to use that experience to demonstrate my translatable soft skills.

Professional development

Brooke's KPMG internship was through their student vacation program. This full-time program allows undergraduates to build their network, gain experience and receive mentoring.

“It was a great experience. I had the opportunity to work within the State Tax team. The support provided allowed me to learn an extraordinary amount in 8 weeks.”

This experience led to Brooke being offered not only a graduate position, but also an undergraduate position.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to keep working with them part-time until graduation. KPMG is a national firm that works across all States and Territories, so there’s always something new to learn.”

After graduation

Brooke’s favourite law subjects are equity, trusts and property. After graduation, Brooke plans to continue working and expanding her legal knowledge at KPMG.

“I aim to get admitted to the Supreme Court by the end of 2026 and look forward to starting my graduate job.”
