Peer mentoring finished for 2026

Most peer mentoring programs have now concluded for 2026.

Some mentors may remain active in Vygo and available to provide support as students finish the semester. If you can't find a mentor to assist you, please contact the one-on-one study help service for study support.

We look forward to welcoming students back to peer mentoring in Semester 1 2027.

What is Peer Mentoring and who are the Peer Mentors?

Peer Mentoring is a student-led support service that pairs you with a peer who has successfully completed your course. Your Peer Mentor can help you understand your assessments, foster your study habits, or build your confidence.

You will get paired with a current high-achieving student volunteer who has completed your course within the previous 12 months.

Become a Peer Mentor

How can I become a mentor?

If you qualify to become a Peer Mentor, you will automatically receive an email from the Peer Mentoring team inviting you to send in an expression of interest.

What do I need to do to qualify?

To become a Peer Mentor for undergraduate or postgraduate by coursework programs, you must:

  • Be a high-achieving student with grades of 75%+ in any of our supported courses.
  • Have completed these courses in the past 12 months.
  •  Be interested in developing your leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

Please note: places are limited and not all applicants are guaranteed a spot

If you meet these conditions, you will need to:

  •  Attend compulsory training on the date and time specified by the team.
  • Obtain a voluntary or paid Working With Children Check (Melbourne mentors).

Invitations will be sent out in February and June for their respective semesters.

What is the time commitment?

The mentoring program officially runs from Week 1 to Week 11 of each semester, during which you’ll volunteer your time to support students as needed. We understand you may have times when you are busy with your own work, so you will have control over if you are seen as ‘Available’ ‘Busy’ or ‘Away’ on the Vygo app. Some mentors with more availability may remain accessible outside of the official program dates to provide continued support to students.

Learn more about becoming a Peer Mentor in the Volunteer Activity Description (PDF, 190KB).

Why become an RMIT Peer Mentor?

As a Peer Mentor, you can make a real difference in another student’s university journey, offering guidance and support when they need it most.

Along the way, you’ll:

  • Develop highly sought-after skills like communication, leadership, time management, and facilitation.
  • Strengthen your knowledge of your study area while building confidence in your abilities.
  • Enhance your résumé with valuable experience that sets you apart from the crowd.
  • Gain access to opportunities, such as networking events and college activities, helping you grow personally and professionally.

Volunteering as a Peer Mentor also contributes toward the RMIT Plus program

Email peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au if you have any questions about becoming a mentor.

Neurodiverse Study Buddies

What is the Study Buddies program?

The Study Buddies program is a peer mentoring initiative designed to support neurodiverse students in developing effective study habits, skills, and strategies to navigate academic challenges with confidence. Your Study Buddy does not need to be from the same course as you to provide assistance.

Our specially trained mentors can:

  • Meet with you on campus.
  • Share tips for staying focused during lectures and retaining key information.
  • Recommend note-taking methods and helpful apps.
  • Share study routines that work for them and strategies for maintaining consistency.
  • Offer insights on breaking down tasks to manage workloads effectively.
  • Suggest favourite study spots on campus or strategies for studying at home.

How to join the Study Buddies program?

Log in to Vygo and search for the Study Buddies program. From there, you can send a request to connect with a mentor of your choice.

In addition to this, some mentors in your course-based programs are trained as Study Buddies so can offer both neurodiverse-informed assistance and course-specific help. Search the mentor profiles in your course mentoring program in Vygo for “Study Buddy”, or look out for the sunflower.

If you’d prefer, you can email the team at peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au telling us what kind of help you would like from a peer mentor. We might need to ask you some questions via email to find a mentor who is a good fit for you. We will then connect you with the right peer mentor in Vygo.

Email the Peer Mentoring team at peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au.

Our inbox is monitored from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, excluding public holidays. Please note, it may take us longer to reply to your email during busy times, like the start of semester.

Peer Mentoring is a free service for RMIT students provided by the RMIT University Library. You will not need to pay to use Vygo or to receiving mentoring.

No. Peer Mentoring is designed to be casual and friendly, so you can choose online or face-to-face based on what works best for you.

Yes! Many students build an ongoing connection with their mentor to receive more comprehensive help. You will be able to access your chat with them all semester so ask as many or as few questions as you need.

Peer Mentors aren’t tutors, so they might not know all the answers to your questions. Instead, they will help you find information and resources, understand assessment briefs and rubrics, and help you plan for the semester.

Vygo is our official platform as it ensures RMIT can offer support and oversight. RMIT does not support other platforms, such as Discord or WhatsApp, so we recommend you choose Vygo for a secure and seamless mentoring experience!

Unfortunately, Peer Mentors are not available for every course at RMIT. If you cannot see your course listed in the Vygo app under ‘Find Your Course’ send us an email at peer.mentoring@rmit.edu.au. We will try to help you find a solution.

If you qualify to become a Peer Mentor (if you receive a grade of 75%+ in one our supported courses) you will receive an email with an invite to join. Check out our tab Become a Peer Mentor with more information.

You can contact a mentor with questions about your course, general support with studying, using the RMIT University Library, or navigating RMIT services. Additionally, you could ask about:

  • Understanding assessment rubrics
  • Finding academic resources
  • Practicing tutorial questions
  • Connecting with study support services such as Ask the Library Exploring campus, study areas and tips and tricks
  • Exploring campus, study areas and tips and tricks
  • Encouragement and support
  • Building confidence to ask questions, speak up in lectures, or contact academics
  • Breaking down tasks and identifying study goals.

Peer Mentors are students, not tutors, so they may not always have the answers you need. If this happens, they can often suggest another mentor or service that can help.

You’re welcome to connect with multiple mentors—choose someone specific to your course or someone who can assist with general study questions. If a mentor isn’t the right fit or doesn’t respond, simply search for another mentor on Vygo.
