Student Spotlight: Phuc Nguyen, Future Founder

Student Spotlight: Phuc Nguyen, Future Founder

Meet Phuc Nguyen – RMIT Vietnam student and a winner of the Future Founders Competition 2019.

Held at the RMIT Ho Chi Minh campus, the annual competition supports participants in building their startup idea. For five weeks, participants have access to Skill Up workshops, online tools and industry support. They also have the opportunity to pitch their startup ideas to a panel of industry experts and stand a chance to win $2000.

Phuc is a 2nd year student undertaking a Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management at RMIT Vietnam and is the President of RMIT ENACTUS SGS. This is what the ambitious innovator has to say about her experience at the Future Founders Competition:

Hi Phuc, what motivated you to join the Future Founders Competition?

ENACTUS collaborated with Activator to deliver the Future Founders Competition last year. Back then, I was an ENACTUS member and thought it was a good way to expand my network with enterprises. So why not join? It was a chance for me to leverage my opportunities at university.

How was your experience at Future Founders Competition like?

It was jampacked with knowledge and upskilling! Every week, the activities helped us to develop our startup idea. Through their workshop series, I learnt to use tools like the Business Canvas Model, refined my pitching skills and gained valuable knowledge that every founder should have.

What was the most valuable thing you got out of the competition?

It was definitely the relationships we built with the competition judges. They’re such a passionate and dedicated bunch of industry experts who offered so much valuable advice to advance our idea. One of them even invited my team and to help kickstart a startup idea of his!

How did Future Founders experience impact your life?

Future Founders equipped me with a lot of important skills, which gave me the courage to go beyond my campus and join international competitions. My team and I represented Vietnam in global competitions like the Young Hotelier Award ASEAN 2019 and Battle of Minds (British American Tobacco), where we competed with countries across Asia, Europe and Africa, and won the first runner up prize for our startup idea. Future Founders laid that foundation of confidence for me to step out of my comfort zone and pursue great opportunities.

What are your future plans?

I don't plan very far into the future - there's no five year plan and I simply focus on what I want to accomplish in the coming weeks. However, I hope to set up a business after graduation focused on my two biggest passions - tourism and sustainability.

Future Founders Competition 2020 is now accepting applications. Registrations close 29 July.
