Instructions

The RMIT Reading Lists guide explains how to access and use course reading lists, with detailed support for academic staff on creating, managing and publishing them. It also includes short videos, FAQs, and library contact details for further help.

Setting up a reading list

Find out how to integrate and manage reading lists in your Canvas course by:

  • adding the LTI to the course navigation menu
  • creating a list and invite collaborators
  • and installing the ‘cite-it’ widget, a browser extension enabling internet resources to be included.

Adding resources to a reading list

Add resources from LibrarySearch, or use the Manual entry option or Cite-It browser extension. Favourites allow you to keep a collection of resources that enable re-use across other reading lists.

Publish and Send to Library

Publishing your reading list makes it visible to your students. The Library will check if all ‘being prepared’ items that are Sent to the Library are copyright compliant.

Rolling over your list

To reuse your reading list, you will need to roll it over into the next teaching Canvas course shell.

Embedding readings in Canvas

There are three different methods to choose from to embed readings in Canvas.

Best practice for reading lists

  • Concise lists: to prevent loading issues and suit the study level.
  • Importance: specify if resources are required or supportive.
  • Enhanced navigation: use weekly topics or section headings.
  • Currency: choose resources less than 5 years old.
  • Electronic preference: opt for online resources to improve access.
  • e-Book awareness: consider user limits and download capacities.
