Library support for RMIT Capabilities

The Library’s Teaching Services support academic and professional staff to align the RMIT Capabilities with curriculum design and development of learning activities and assessments.

The Library’s Teaching Support team offers various services designed to help you develop RMIT Capabilities in your students, ensuring they gain the skills and knowledge needed for their academic and professional success. These services have been carefully mapped to align with the University's educational goals. Here's how they contribute to building these capabilities: 

Service:

The Reading List app allows teaching staff to create and manage dynamic Reading Lists in Canvas. Ensures copyright compliance and connects students directly with their course learning materials. The Library provides advice and troubleshooting on using Reading Lists in Canvas, as well as introductory webinars and workshops.

Enabler:

Reading Lists enhance student capabilities by providing structured learning, helping students prioritise and manage their reading time effectively. Selected readings improve comprehension by offering diverse perspectives that deepen understanding and critical thinking.  Research skills are enhanced by teaching students to navigate, assess and integrate information from various sources.

Service:

We offer resources and services to help build course content, enhance teaching, and improve student learning experiences. This includes support for new course development and review processes, professional development workshops for staff, and curriculum architecture activities. Additionally, we curate learning materials on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and Open Educational Resources (OER).

Enabler:

Curation of learning materials can significantly support student capabilities by saving time through the provision of high-quality, relevant resources. It offers diverse perspectives for deeper understanding and critical thinking. Learning materials in different formats cater to different learning styles and maintain student interest. Additionally, curated materials align with learning goals and student needs for a more meaningful learning experience.

Service:

The Library’s Teaching Support Team is a direct partner for programs and courses undergoing development and uplift in the Curriculum Architecture process.

Enabler:

Curriculum architecture plays a crucial role in supporting and enhancing student capabilities by providing a structured and comprehensive framework for learning. We work with academics and learning designers on courses undergoing Curriculum Architecture. This support enables teachers and learning designers to enhance student capabilities. Support includes Reading Lists and resource curation.

Service:

The Library curates and creates digital objects including guides, videos, podcasts, learning modules and H5P objects for staff and student use.

Enabler:

The Library creates digital objects to assist students in locating, evaluating, and using information. These tools are available to students to support all phases of their learning. The Library also creates objects with original content to support teachers in their work and enrich student materials. The Library curates and updates digital objects and makes them accessible to students and teachers to enable building student capabilities.

Service: 

The Open Publishing Team manages open book projects and supports authors in a range of activities related to open book publishing and open pedagogy, including: the stages of open publishing; technical design and troubleshooting; advice on how to involve students in open publishing; and how to incorporate open educational practices in teaching and learning.  

Enabler:

Open publishing enables teachers to enhance student capabilities through applying open pedagogical practices. This includes supporting teacher collaboration with students as authors, promoting teachers’ use of open educational practices, and modelling best practice of IDEA Principles to enhance student capabilities as content creators and users of OER.

Service:

A series of webinars and podcasts designed to enhance teaching skills and professional development, particularly assisting staff to deliver content that addresses key capabilities.

Enabler:

The Teaching Spotlight series provides teachers with the latest information on pedagogy, resources, and methods to enable them to deliver the best learning experience to students. Students benefit from teachers who are fully aware of library resources, tools, and supports, the latest trends and opportunities in teaching, and best practices for inclusion and accessibility.

Service:

Provides copyright support for RMIT’s learning, teaching and research activities. This includes answering queries and offering copyright advice and consultations for staff and students.

Permissions seek copyright clearances on behalf of staff to clear rights with a publisher/author/creator to use their copyright protected material for teaching activities. Cleared materials can be safely linked to from Reading Lists or integrated into Canvas courses.

e-Reserve supports teachers and learning designers to make course-related readings available online for students under RMIT's educational licence with the Copyright Agency. Including digitisation and the use of text and images from the web and textbooks. e-Reserve materials can be safely linked to from Reading Lists.

Enabler:

Copyright services enhance student capabilities by helping teaching staff and students in best practice for lifelong skills and compliance across disciplines including academic integrity. It enhances skills required to undertake research including the importance of using third party copyright material in a compliant manner.

Copyright enhances innovation by legally protecting the economic rights of creators of art, film, architecture and written material including that of your students.

Permissions service enhances student capabilities by helping teachers to demonstrate best practice for lifelong skills and compliance across disciplines including academic integrity.

e-Reserve service enhances student capabilities by helping teachers demonstrate best practice for lifelong skills and compliance across disciplines including academic integrity.
