Professor Vivian Mitsogianni, Dean of RMIT's School of Architecture & Urban Design and co-editor of the publication, said the book seeks to capture a moment in time at RMIT Architecture.
“We want to ensure that future graduates can learn from our collective adventures and misadventures, building on or challenging the ideas presented,” she said.
“In the book I wrote that the significant challenges of our time are wicked problems, which require new ideas and transdisciplinary approaches.”
“Architects need to find ways to contribute, be effective and have agency in situations in which architecture – in its expanded definition – is often considered to be a peripheral contributor.”
“What all the projects in the book have in common, and what the culture of the school aims to support, is the struggle to develop new techniques, processes and ways of engaging so that we are able to have agency and contribute through design.”
RMIT’s Architecture community – contributors, colleagues, current staff and students and of course, alumni of RMIT Master of Architecture – came together to celebrate the launch of the book at the RMIT Design Hub in August.
The event included speeches from Professor Tim Marshall, RMIT Deputy Vice-Chancellor, College of Design and Social Context; Rodney Eggleston from March Studio, alumnus and multi-AIA award winning architect; and Liam Oxlade and Mietta Mullaly, the alumni co-editors, all helping to launch the book
The publication is published by ACTAR (Barcelona/NY) and will have international distribution.
RMIT Architecture/Built Environment is ranked #1 in Australia and #18 in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
