RMIT strengthens Vietnam, France and Australia ties

RMIT University has strengthened ties between Vietnam, France and Australia by marking the milestone of RMIT Vietnam's 25th anniversary with alumni, industry, government and university partners in Paris.

Since its establishment in 2000 as Vietnam’s first fully foreign university, RMIT Vietnam has grown into a vibrant, multi-campus institution with over 25,000 alumni making an impact around the world.

France is home to the largest group of RMIT Vietnam alumni in Europe, with this cohort recently connecting in Paris to mark the University’s anniversary milestone.

Government leaders from Vietnam, France and Australia joined the celebration reception, including His Excellency Mr Dinh Toan Thang, Vietnam’s Ambassador to France; Gönül Serbest, Commissioner for Victoria to Europe, Middle East, Türkiye and Africa; and Arnaud Melilli, Head of Asia Pacific at Choose Paris Region.

In his remarks at the event, His Excellency Mr Dinh Toan Thang said that the growing community of RMIT Vietnam alumni in France serves as a bridge of knowledge and culture, strengthening the bonds between Vietnam, France and Australia, and enriching the shared values that connect the three nations.

“This milestone celebration takes place against the backdrop of Vietnam’s elevated partnerships with both France and Australia, an exceptional convergence that highlights the depth and breadth of our shared ties,” Ambassador Dinh said.

“Education and training remain a cornerstone of our partnership with France, reflecting our joint commitment to innovation, progress and human development.”

RMIT Vietnam Pro Vice-Chancellor and General Director Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside said that the University’s growing alumni community in Europe demonstrates the power that international education has on student experiences and graduates.

“As a leading University of impact in the Asia Pacific region, our promise is to empower people and communities not only in the region but also globally,” he said.

RMIT Vietnam alumnus Vy Lam, now working as a Data Product Manager at Ubisoft’s headquarters in Paris, said that her time at RMIT Vietnam provided her with a foundation for an international career.

"During my time at RMIT Vietnam, I participated in student-run clubs and activities that enabled me to develop the very skillsets of project management that set the course for the career I have today,” Lam said.

Arnaud Melilli, Head of Asia Pacific at Choose Paris Region, said that RMIT alumni and researchers in Europe act as a bridge between the three nations.

“What makes these connections truly meaningful is that they are built on a foundation of education and knowledge exchange,” Melilli said.

The event also featured a special pop-up exhibition curated by RMIT Vietnam fashion students and academics, reflecting on Vietnamese textile traditions and contemporary design.

The exhibition was grounded in the premise of Paris being one of the world’s fashion capitals, as well as the longstanding cultural influence and exchange within the Vietnamese and French fashion sectors.

The event, which was organised by RMIT Europe, was supported by Vietnam Airlines, AB VietFrance, the Victoria State Government, NatureBebe - Bobi Craft and the Australia France Business Association.

As RMIT Vietnam celebrates its 25th anniversary, the University looks forward to strengthening its role as a bridge for people-to-people connections.

This local celebration is part of a series of key events across Vietnam, Australia and Europe.
