The new funding agreement will deliver an enhanced program covering 3.5 years through to December 2028.
In the second half of 2025, 460 care experienced students were participating in studies across higher and vocational education at RMIT, which represents a third of all care experienced students studying throughout the state.
Sherman Young, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, described RMIT as a proud partner of the Raising Expectations program, which is closely aligned with the University’s mission.
“We want every member of our community to feel empowered to be bold, to explore, and to thrive,” he said.
“This additional funding will enable a one-of-a-kind program to expand and, in line with the vision of the Australian Universities Accord, allow a broader range of people to flourish as a result.
“But we know access is just the first step. Ongoing support is essential and we’ve seen this through our bespoke outreach activities for learners with backgrounds in care, both on campus and in-school. It’s the wrap-around support that fosters success.
“The announcement that the Raising Expectations program will be expanded is evidence that, together, we can elevate a cohort of learners with a great deal to offer.”
A tangible example of the program’s impact is care-experienced student and Raising Expectations Program Mentee, Kayden, who is currently studying an associate degree of engineering technology at RMIT.
“I have been supported by the Raising Expectations team for nearly a year now and they have helped me work towards many different goals, such as getting through exam time and giving me great strategies and helping along the way with my uni applications,” he said.
“I’ve been matched with a mentor who also has lived experience in care. They’ve offered valuable real-world guidance on managing independence and continuing my studies after leaving care.
“Having that ongoing connection has been incredibly supportive especially when I’ve had questions and wasn’t sure where to turn.”
In 2026, RMIT will offer a tailored Open Day event available to young people and their carers or support workers. Participants will be able to access a dedicated hub space staffed by RMIT staff, Raising Expectations team members, and current care experienced students.
