Get ready for classes! Five ways you can prepare for the start of semester

For most students, classes are not too far away. Whether you’re new to RMIT or returning in 2025, there’s plenty of ways you can get ready for the start of semester.

1. Make sure you’ve got your student card

Still haven’t ordered your student card or need to replace a lost card? Ordering a student card is quick and easy and can be done online. Your first student card is free, and most students receive their student card in 3-5 business days.

2. Get your class timetable

Avoid those early mornings and long gaps between classes by structuring your timetable as soon as possible. Allocation occurs on a first-in, first-served basis so make sure you log in to myTimetable to make your adjustments. You can change your timetable allocations until 1 April, so if you haven't got your desired timeslots - keep trying!

3. Explore Canvas

Familiarise yourself with Canvas, your digital classroom. This is where you access course content and announcements, submit assignments, and receive your grades and feedback. For new students, there are some simple things you should do to get set up on Canvas, such as setting up notifcations and making sure all of your courses are appearing.

4. Apply for transport concession

Whether you take the train, tram or bus to uni, RMIT is incredibly accessible by public trasnport. These costs can add up quickly though, so before buying an adults Myki card - check if you're eligible for a concession card!*

A transport concession card will give you half-price travel fares, saving you up to $5.50 per day.

*Domestic students only.

5. Complete your mandatory modules

RMIT is committed to creating a safe place for students and staff, where everyone feels included, respected and supported. Students new to RMIT are required to complete the following online modules as part of their onboarding to RMIT:

  • Academic Integrity Awareness
  • Sex and Consent
  • How2RMIT (highly recommended)

Each module is self-paced will take you less than an hour to complete, so why spend this time to ge thtem done before classes start!
