First Semester 101: Six ways you can prepare for the start of semester

Whether you’re new to RMIT or returning, there are plenty of ways you can get ready for the start of a new semester.

1. Change your default password

To access all RMIT systems, you’ll need to create your own password. This password will be used for all RMIT systems including Canvas, your RMIT email, Enrolment Online and more.

2. Make sure you’ve got your student card

Still haven’t ordered your student card or need to replace a lost one? Ordering a student card is quick and easy and can be done online. Your first student card is free, and most students receive theirs within 3–5 business days.

3. Start using your RMIT email

RMIT provides all students with a free email account upon enrolment. Even before semester starts, you’ll receive communication about Orientation, key dates and support. It’s your responsibility to check your email regularly.

4. Explore Canvas

Canvas is your digital classroom. This is where you access course content and announcements, submit assignments, and receive grades and feedback. For new students, start by setting up notifications and checking that all your courses appear.

5. Complete How2RMIT

How2RMIT is a free online onboarding module designed to help new students get organised for a smooth transition into university life. It covers everything from timetabling, fees and loans, making friends, finding your way around, getting involved in the RMIT community, and available support services.

6. Complete your mandatory modules

RMIT is committed to creating a safe environment where everyone feels included, respected and supported. Students new to RMIT must complete the following online modules:

  • Academic Integrity Awareness

  • Sex and Consent

Each module is self-paced and takes less than an hour to complete, so why not get them done before classes start!
