Pitch perfect: Pitch@Palace 2018

Fashionable, adaptable post-surgery clothing and the perfect football boot for women – just two of the offerings from Victorian entrepreneurs at Pitch@Palace On Tour Melbourne.

RMIT hosted the Melbourne round of the event, which gives entrepreneurs a platform to amplify and accelerate their work, n the stately Victorian Government House ballroom

Vice-Chancellor Martin Bean CBE guided 17 teams of Victorian entrepreneurs, who had three minutes each to pitch their innovations to an audience of potential investors, supporters and judges.

Seven RMIT teams took part, with Recovawear, providers of post-surgery clothing, and IDA Sports, designers of made-for-women football boots, making it through to the Pitch@Palace Australia Final in Brisbane on 30 November.

Founder of Recovawear and RMIT alumnus and academic Penny Weber, who has also participated in the RMIT Activator Sandbox program, said she was delighted to be involved.

“It was such an honour to be involved in such an amazing event. The contacts I have made have already accelerated the opportunities of the brand,” Weber said.

IDA Sports Co-founder Ben Sandhu, said it was an extraordinary opportunity for the business, which is currently involved in Activator’s LaunchHUB program.

“Of course there were a few butterflies, but it was really humbling pitching to such an engaged audience of some of the best and brightest business leaders in Melbourne,” Sandhu said.

The Pitch@Palace participants were an exciting example of the entrepreneurial mindset in action, combining great ideas and innovative technology to solve local and global problems.

Another pitch on the night came from Master of Analytics student and Research Officer in the School of Science Dr Jo Zimpel, who developed STEM Hub, an online marketplace that connects industry with the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) community.

They’re currently focused on providing top quality STEM internships, capstone projects and jobs for students and recent graduates.

Zimpel, who developed the business after her own difficulty finding work in the industry post study, said the experience at Pitch@Palace was phenomenal.

“I was approached by some amazing companies,” Zimpel said.

The future looks bright for STEM Hub, partnering with RMIT’s School of Science and looking to extend their relationship with the College of Science, Engineering and Health.
