Come and be a part of RMIT's Tech and Trades Experience Day, an exciting event that lets you delve into the dynamic world of Technology and Trades!

Don't miss out on this exclusive chance to gain practical knowledge, explore potential career paths, and network with industry professionals. Join us at RMIT's Tech and Trades Experience Day and get a glimpse of what your future could hold!

We welcome all year 10, 11 and 12 high school students as well as parents/guardians. Students can participate in two hands-on workshops, tour facilities, interact with staff and students, and win prizes. Parents can connect with staff, students, and industry guests to learn about opportunities at RMIT.

Students will have the chance to choose two workshops from fields such as Building Design, Carpentry, Cyber Security, Electrical, Engineering, Refrigeration, Information Technology, Plumbing, and Surveying. These fields offer strong industry growth and promising future career prospects.

Workshops

Do you like to draw or create sketches of building designs?

In this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to showcase your creative side whilst understanding the role of a building designer on a project. Immerse yourself in a hands-on experience, where you’ll be provided with guidance from our teachers to design a brief, sketch and draw a basic building plan.   

Do you enjoy making and creating objects with wood?

Join us for an immersive carpentry workshop where you'll have the opportunity to learn about different carpentry hand tools, including nailing guns and electric drop saws. RMIT teachers will guide you through a demonstration and provide assistance as you use these tools to cut timber and create various shapes.

This hands-on experience will allow you to understand the role of a carpenter whilst teaching you woodworking skills through the different techniques and materials used in the craft.  

Are you noticing that you are getting more and more spam through text messages?

In this workshop, you will participate in an interactive cyber-attack scenario involving phishing email, text, Facebook scams and more advance methods of stealing data online. Learn about performing credential harvesting and how people’s information is stolen. 

Get charged up for an electrifying workshop designed specifically for those interested in pursuing a career as an electrician!

This Workshop will provide you the opportunity to simulate real-world scenarios. You will wire circuits, be involved in assembling electrical panels, and solve electrical problems to develop your practical skills and gain confidence in working with electrical systems.

Are you interested in becoming an engineer, but not sure which field you are most interested in?

This workshop will allow you to engage in practical exercises, design challenges, and experiments through the latest advancements in engineering technologies and their applications in various fields, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and more.  

Have you heard of an IP?

It’s pretty much a series of numbers that identify any device on a network like the computer or phone you use.

In this workshop, you have the opportunity to cable and configure state-of the-art networking devices. You’ll learn a few concepts to understand cable types, switches, and routers and also learn how IP addressing is so important to know. 

Plumbing is a trade that is always in demand!

If you are interested in learning more about the plumbing industry, come and join this workshop where you’ll have the opportunity to use and understand our newest Virtual Reality Welding Machine.

You’ll also learn about pipe joining through an interactive activity. Join in the fun with a competition to showcase the pipe joining skills you learn on the day.

Would you like to know how to cool a can of drink in a few minutes?

This workshop will highlight the latest advancements in refrigeration technologies. You will have the opportunity to engage in a hands-on activity that will teach you the different types of refrigeration systems whilst exploring the fundamental principles of refrigeration, including the vapor compression cycle, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and refrigerant properties.  

So what does a surveyor really do?

If you have seen them on the sidewalk looking through a tripod and questioned “what are they doing?”, join this workshop for a demonstration to better understand the importance of surveyors. Learn how they use a range of equipment to capture measurements and data for property and land construction-related projects.
