Misinformation and disinformation are prevalent – and becoming harder to identify. Do you have the skills to separate what's real from what is not?

It used to be easy to tell, but that comment is showing up on more Instagram reels, TikToks and other social media videos than before.

With generative AI becoming more sophisticated each day, it can be really hard to spot what’s real and what isn’t. In a world where people can no longer believe their eyes, being able to identify the telltale signs of misinformation and disinformation is a critical skill.

That’s where our new Fact Check course comes in. Recently redeveloped by RMIT University Library along with subject matter expert, Sushi Das, this open educational resource is now available to anyone in the world.

Formerly Chief of Staff of RMIT's Fact Lab and a 20-year journalism vet, Sushi Das is a leader in this field. This online course will get you thinking critically about what constitutes a reliable source of information and scrutinising what you encounter online.

What is covered?

This course will provide essential fact-checking skills to help you determine the accuracy of information published across multiple platforms. You will learn to distinguish between facts and opinions, as well as how to identify original and reliable sources of information.

You will learn skills that will make it easier for you to spot false information and adulterated photos and videos. The module aims to make critical thinking a reflex action: a skill that employers are increasingly looking for.

The Fact Check course will help you to develop the following skills:

  • Evaluation
  • Critical thinking
