An initiative of the Victorian Government's Creative State strategy, presented in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Design Week (15-25 March) explores the wide-ranging effects of design on contemporary life.

Among the many jewels supported by RMIT is Decennium, a one-night-only showcase that celebrates the work and development of 30 alumni from the award-winning Associate Degree in Design (Furniture)

The event also marks the 10th anniversary of the renowned course.

Decennium co-creator and RMIT lecturer, Leo Sadlek, says the event is an opportunity to see some of the amazing work that alumni have created.

“These alumni have been part of the design community making contributions to a wide range of products and services for Melbourne, as well as attracting international attention,” Sadlek says.

“Some have worked in the field of object design, working through challenging problems incorporating the use of materials, technology and sustainable practice.

“Other alumni have had a career vector that has lead them to work within the social entrepreneurial field.

“Many have developed skills that add to the vibrant, highly skilled and crafted items that explore and enhance the local small manufacturing sector. In the last 10 years many alumni have contributed to a supportive community of practice.”

Professor Paul Gough, Pro Vice-Chancellor Design and Social Context and Vice-President, said: “RMIT is ranked first in Australia and 11th in the world for Art and Design.

“We work with many local and international design organisations to share our expertise and ambitions for quality design and architectural outcomes.

“We’re delighted to partner with the NGV to showcase ‘the right now’ in design at Melbourne Design Week.”

Decennium is on Friday 23 March, 6pm-10pm at the RMIT Alumni Courtyard, 357-377 Russell Street. Entry is free.
