RMIT maintains strong position in second QS Sustainability rankings

RMIT has again performed strongly in the QS Sustainability rankings, which measure how universities are tackling the world’s biggest environmental, social and governance challenges.

From a field of close to 1,400 universities, RMIT has secured equal 62nd position globally, and 11th in Australia. 

The University performed particularly strongly on Governance (equal 23rd globally) and Equality (equal 10th globally and equal 1st in Australia). 

The results reinforce RMIT’s position as a leading institution in environmental, economic and social impact after ranking equal 7th globally in the Times Higher Education Impact rankings earlier this year.  

"We are incredibly proud of this result which aligns with our determination to be a University that makes a positive contribution in the communities we serve," Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron said.

RMIT's Knowledge with Action strategy, a 9-year strategy launched in 2022, puts clear focus on impact with new key performance indicators introduced to measure education and research output aligned to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's). 

"Along with a high-quality education, we aim to inspire in our students the drive to make a difference in a complex and changing world; so as a University of influence, we also consider it our duty to involve ourselves in issues of civic, regional and global importance," Cameron added.

This year's QS Sustainability result cannot be compared year-on-year due to several methodological changes, varying weights to indicators and doubling of the number of institutions ranked this year - 1,403 compared to 700 last year, where RMIT ranked 55th overall.

RMIT's performance in global rankings

While there are many ranking schemas, the following are the key ones aligned to RMIT’s discipline strengths:

  • QS World University Rankings: 140th overall (up 50 places). RMIT also has eight subject areas ranked in the world’s top 100.

  • Times Higher Education World University Rankings: RMIT moved up in band to 251-300, with an estimated rank of 251. The University also ranked equal 7th overall in the Impact Rankings and 1st for addressing inequalities, =1st for supporting decent work and economic growth, and =2nd for partnering to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

  • CWTS Leiden Rankings: Ranked 87th (up 41 places) on citation impact.

  • Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Rankings): 13 subject areas ranked in the world’s top 100.
