RMIT expert available for comment on the new Victorian digital driver licences

An expert from RMIT University is available to talk to media about digital driver licences, now available to Victorian full licence holders.

Dr Shahriar Kaisar

"The shift from physical to digital licenses promises convenience, with one less thing to carry in our wallet. It will also ensure contact details can be updated immediately as well as offering stronger measures against lost or stolen physical cards.

“It is reassuring a pilot study in Victoria did not reveal any significant issues, however digital licences may still encounter potential privacy and security risks.

“These could be caused by unnecessary oversharing of information, potential forgery by malicious users, the installation of malicious software, or unauthorised access of a lost phone.

“myVicRoads app users will need to be cautious that they only share the information that is absolutely necessary to access relevant services.

“It is expected that the Victorian government will regularly update the app to deal with potential cyberattacks and monitor businesses to ensure they follow privacy regulations."

Dr Shahriar Kaisar is Lecturer in Information Systems in the College of Business and Law at RMIT University.
